I just bought a vintage Vespa without a title. I located this number Vbb2m 202720 on the engine. According to this number it is a 1964 150cc. I am having trouble reading the frame vin. Prior to the * it is impossible to read. There is some rust and I believe it was painted over. Any suggestions on how to read this number. Should it be similar to the one on the engine. Scooter doet run and I'm looking to restore it. It has been sitting for approximately 30 years. Any help would be appreciated.

Post pics when you can.
If the engine serial is correct and the scooter has really been sitting for 30 years, I would just assume it's an original Vespa 150 and go from there. I suppose you could try and take a wire brush and work at the rust to see if you can uncover the full serial number from the frame... but pics would just as easily let the members here confirm the body style. Most importantly, welcome to MV! |

Thanks for welcoming me to MV. I'll try to post pics soon. I do not know the history or who previously owned it at this point. Bought it off eBay from a person who bought it from an estate. Trying to get the vin to do a title search for a court order so I can obtain a title in Pennsylvania.

So you have seen the location of the number under the LH cowel, I had the same problem couldn't read the number on my 66 so I hit is with my sanding disc on my grinder one hit with the disc and it really showed up. Dick

I should have the eBay link on my compter. I thought about using a sanding disk but was concerned about making it impossible to read. I'm going to try to post the pictures later today.

wire brush attachment on a dremel works, just be careful, dont use a sanding disc.
I had to do this as the idiot who painted my px (me) painted over it I just clear lackered it and made a feature of it rather than painting over |

Well, based on what you've said, it sounds like a '64 VBB.... a 150cc, 8" wheeled bike. It was one of the more common bikes of that era, and parts are plentiful.

Nice old bike... hear that sound? That's a collective sigh of relief.
For the VIN you might want to try some paint stripper or naval jelly before you hit it with anything abrasive. The stampings can be pretty thin sometimes. |

Been awhile, I used
some 000 steel wool and was able to read the VIN. Now trying to get a cout order so DOT will issue a title. Then the rebuild |

to get the lightest stamped VIN numbers just do a rubbing.
put a thin piece of paper over the number and rub it with charcoal. |

Aside from getting it purring like popcorn in a microwave, I wouldn't do anything to it cosmetically. That thing fucking rules as-is.

The first job I would do is lose that trailer front tyre, and the rear one too if it's the same, or the first corner will spit you off.
Otherwise, very, very nice. Good find. |
