I love military aviation and used to work at a journalism gig that covered it before I got into teaching.
Seeing the pic of the Harrier in VTOL mode made me think, why the heck is *anyone* worried about two stroke pollution from a few vintage scooters with beasts like that in the air? The Harrier, with its relatively old tech, probably goes through a full tank of my Vespa in aviation fuel in less than an eyeblink, and that's just to warm up!! (Well?) over a decade ago -- when the Ottawa Air Show was still held at a relatively small municipal airport (which, along with the flight school, was run by a friend's dad as a sort of mid-life crisis/hobby to be a business owner) I got to see the damage left by a Harrier up close. With its nozzles in the fully down position to allow a vertical landing, it literally melted the asphalt and pushed it away like wind on a puddle. Needless to say, on departure the pilot only put the nozzles to 45 degrees for a shortened takeoff. Okay, some advice for jets: just blow some air through them to clean them out! |
