I have read a lot of post on here about people getting stung by bees and waspes. I happen to be alergic to these vespids, and I ride with an EpiPen. In my first week riding my Vespa, I was getting nailed by bugs a lot, and I began to worry that one day I would get stung. So, today I installed a tall Vespa windscreen. Do people still get stung with this windscreen? I was also thinking of cutting it down so I could see over the top, but obviously this would expose the top of my head. Does a cut down windscreen create enough wind deflection to divert the bugs over my head? I have both a full face and half helmet, leather sportbike jacket and I ride with long pants, but, I want to limit my encounters and be able to leave the jacket home when it is 90 F out.

My wife was stung last weekend by a bee that came over or around her windscreen on a GTS. Her windshield is just tall enough for her to look over and has a Laminar Lip on top to help direct the wind up and over her head. I've had this happen on motorcycles with full size windscreens. Sometimes a bee can get caught in the wind draft and land on your leg or some part of your body. Then it will sting you. That's what happened to my wife. The bee didn't hit her with any force at all but once it got on her leg, it crawled under her jacket and stung her in the side of her stomach.
I have never had a bee or wasp come over the top of the shield and sting me in the face or neck but I'm sure it's probably happened to someone. Since you are allergic, it's a risk that you should be aware of. It may never happen to you but it certainly can. |

I have a cut down tall screen on my 300, Bug encounters (in the face) are pretty much eliminated. Screen is cut to a few inches below eye level.
The wind pretty much deflects up & over. I don't get bugs to the face when I'm using it. The odd thing about these screens though, is you end up getting wind on your back... the faster you go, the more it feels like the wind is pushing you along. |

Never been bitten with a cut down version of the big screen. I have a new scooter with a flyscreen and have been bitten twice in a month with it. I'm up near you, in MA. The big screen is a good call for you.

Thanks for the feed back on your windscreens and bugs. I guess it will be a crap shoot. I'll just do as much as I can to improve my odds. I'll be ready and willing to jab myself with the epi if needed. Bikes are just too much fun for me to not ride because of a little bug. I do, however, always check my drink when I am outside. I have heard the horror stories of people getting stung in the mouth from a bee in their beer!

I've been riding with windscreens cut at eye level for 5 years and have never encountered a bug problem (tho admittedly we don't have many here). Miguel

I was just recently stung by a bee. I have a tall windscreen on my BV500, but the bee got caught up in the jet-stream around the side of the scooter. I was stupidly wearing shorts while riding and the bee flew up my shorts and stung my thigh. I had to pull over to the side of the road to pull the bee off.
No more shorts for me, but the point being that anything can happen and it sounds like you are prepared medically. Shane |

I was also recently stung by a bee, but I don't think it was swept around the windscreen. I was riding fairly slowly (about 25mph) with a rather large screen, and the bee somehow ended up inside my helmet, stinging me in front of my ear. I assume it was travelling across the road and passed between the screen and my head.
