Someone on the Mod side was discussing whether their scooter was really a good investment so I got to wondering about just what you pay now for a decent P compared to what they originally sold for.

I had a couple 80's promotional pamphlets touting the P-series lineup, and i vaguely remember they were in the $900-$1000 range... don't quote me, i've since lost the material. I'm sure some folks on here kicked the tires on them when they were new, and maybe remember.
Then they fell to be almost worthless like 10-15 years ago...and now they're worth like 2000-3500 depending on the condition.

That would make it an excellent investment. Especially a vehicle made in the early 80's! Thanks.

I have the original receipt from 1979 when it was bought. I don't have it here in front of me, but if I recall correctly, I think it said it cost a little over $1000.
I paid $2800 for it last year. |

*sigh* don't you wish that's how cheap it could be now, for something of such good quality?

I don't think there's any problem with buying something that you love and are going to ride, and in the time you have it, it gains in value. I think that's something the lot of us hope happens to our bikes.
If you're talking about those that buy and sell to flip, i know plenty of those guys too. I don't know that they're destroying the scene, though ..i think that's a bit strong. It's capitalism, really. If i see a $50 VBB on craigslist, i'm going to go buy it, clean it up and make it run right, and then sell it for $1500 or whatever on scoot.net and not feel too bad about it. I wouldn't try to scalp the unwitting for $4000, or make it out to be more than it is. In fact, i'd more likely punt it off on someone locally who's looking to ride and join the club. It's one of the reasons there's so many scooterists here in detroit -Eric |

I was riding along the beach one day and stopped at the little store for a break and a soda. A guy driving a jag stopped by and was commenting on my scooter, whats it worth blah blah blah. He then mentioned that he had a Vespa so I asked him what kind.
He had an E4 and asked if I thought it was OK to ride it because it was going to be worth sooooo much in the future or should he just store it. I just looked at him and said "Dude..I'm riding the snot out of this 64 GL, I don't buy scooters to let them sit! |

Funny, I was living in Italy at the time too,
Never thought to ask the price of a new one. I was always looking at the second hand ones. It must have been in the Millions back then for a new one, Millions of Lira that is. |

I paid $600 for my P200, very rusty and not running but pretty much all there. Good compression when turned over. Hadn't run for a number of years though. By the time "I" rebuilt it, so only parts cost up until final wiring and start up. That cost me about $900, I have about $3200 in it including registering it with no title.( That costs extra) Looks real nice and runs great, I love it.
