Jim,
In this case, all the words you listed are spelled the same in U.K. English and U.S. English. The "break" word drives me nuts. But the worst is when someone uses "Your" (posesive) for "You're" (you are). ***OOPS...............Rex beat me to it during my first edit. ⚠️ Last edited by XLR8 on UTC; edited 2 times

I have one of my own - there's no "RE" in ridiculous, whether you're spelling it or saying it out loud.

My newest ones are:
Should of ... Could of... Would of ... These contractions seem to have been confused somewhere along the way with these people and they actually spell it like they say it. Weirdly, these same people rarely say things like "should not of" - instead, they say "should not have". As soon as negation is introduced, they seem to have their heads on. In addition to the other ones mentioned, I have a problem when people don't use the word 'an' properly. "I want a ice cream cone." GRR!! But in the end, my most violence-inducing fucup is: "Hey! I have a great ideal!" The problem I have with this one is clearly these people actually go through their entire lives not listening to the way the rest of the world says this word. Some of these Mensa candidates actually write it correctly but speak it incorrectly which causes an infinite loop inside my brain and I have to eat a bullet. I'm far from perfect at proper sentence structure and spelling, but for common shit that you use daily, please learn the right way to use it! Confession: Until recently, I had always thought there were two Ls in familiar. I was embarrassed with myself, when it dawned on me. Edit: I forgot another one. Using then when they mean than, and than when they mean then. This one is popping up all over the place it seems. ⚠️ Last edited by beamerweb on UTC; edited 1 time

True, one is always learning!
Above, good point on the 'of' as opposed to 'have' - far too prevalent. |

Too many twos lead to confusion. You're going nowhere with out your helmet. Here you can hear the sea. You will break your brake if you pull to hard. (or don't break your brake) It's easy to put it in its place. (it's = it is | its = possessive it) ⚠️ Last edited by Rustle on UTC; edited 2 times

there's a few stories of what it means. it is mainly used to describe shock or used to describe that something is genuine or true
one says that dinkum came from the English midlands and meant 'work'. so 'fair dinkum' mean hard work. but the one I like and the one that makes more sense seing how it is used is that it came from the Chinese during the gold rush. they used 'din gum' to describe 'real gold'. over the years anything 'fair dinkum' is being described as genuine |

No one here minds those folk who are dyslexic - (often self-evident, and immediately excused) but wilful mis-spelling or bloody bad grammar written by those who should know better and can do better is - umm - bloody infuriating.
A spell-checker should be available to all but those who use the most esoteric of browsers. And just to make it very clear - there's no worries about different 'world' spellings, it's just the more ghastly mistakes that seem to get perpetuated, over and over again, no clue learned. ⚠️ Last edited by jimc on UTC; edited 1 time

No way - if English isn't their first language - that's usually recognised and understood and accommodated.
It's those who should apparently know better (and not everyone in the UK or elsewhere necessarily should) that ought to look to their laurels. BUT - speech is one thing - written words are another. In my book there are few who cannot spell[1] - many just don't bother though. [1] Dyslexics and those with associated conditions. Those with hearing difficulties (sadly many bikers), plus some others. |

i am at fault i rely on spell check so much that when i post here at mv i get lazy. it is not right. greasy125 corrected me when i first joined about how i would run on with sentences and not use the space bar between the period and next sentence. i think progress is better than perfection. i will improve with age. ![]() |

GRR!! 1: a orange car 2: an orange car I always like to use "an" before words (adjectives or nouns) that begin with vowels or silent "H"s. However, that may be an influence from studying French. I typically see the rule that "a" is used when the noun it modifies begins with a consonant and "an" is used when the noun begins with a vowel, regardless of the adjectives before the noun. I have actually seen grammar texts that list both ways. I am somewhat of a grammar maven/queen. I actually won several contests in school, even at the state level. However, my abilities have been declining. Just trying to refresh the old grammar skills. |
