one would think! Yet another reason to hate internet exploder.

I would be nowhere without the spell-checker and dictionary in Safari or firefox.
There's IEspell, works very well here when I remember to use it - and thankfully it has to be a conscious choice to use it.

I have to add - I use MS OS's and browsers because those I support do so - it behoves me to to use what they do.

I'll bypass Vista though, what a piece of shite.

Ubuntu netbook next here I suspect.

Then - Than: "I put on twice as many miles then Bob."

AND

Pillion: the pillion is the passenger seat damn it! The person riding on the pillion is the passenger. Yes, you can ride pillion but you cannot be the pillion.

Just for the sake of history, the pillion was originally just a pad, usually made of animal pelts, that sat behind the saddle on a horse. It was called the pillion pad (obviously). Somewhere the name was shortened to simply the letters P.P. Hardcore bikers somewhere renamed it the Pussy Pad.

Even though it's NSR, this is my favorite (I know you've all seen it before).

Btw, for our Anglesiders, in the U.S. the letter 'a' in 'Morans' would be pronounced long.

My pet peeve is Vespa's, as mentioned earlier in the thread.

There are people who INSIST on sticking an apostrophe in when adding an s, to make the word plural. Instead of making it plural, they have made it singular possessive.

Every time I see Vespa's in print, I ask Vespa's what? Usually it is ignored, the poster doesn't have a clue or doesn't give a shit, and someone else jumps and makes some crack about thread police.

I even made a poem about it.

I remember when my dad made me understand why when I said " I could care less" that that was incorrect.

it took me awhile to get it.

but of course he was right.

the correct way to say that is " I could'nt care less", because if I could care less than that means that i still care.

but in truth I don't care at all so " I could'nt care less" is correct Nerd emoticon

You don't have to be literate to read road signs ... so therefore (I might safely conclude), you probably don't have to be literate to enjoy a ride on a scooter.
Lack of literacy and posting on this forum? Well, this thread speaks to that issue.

I like this thread!

Most of my peeves have been covered, but I relish ferreting out misstated supermarket price signs.

Example: ".75¢" when the price is meant to be 75 cents or "$.75" or "$ 0.75." I give extra credit to my 4th Graders if they can spot these mistakes in the local market and take a photo or bring the sign in.

Also, in California, you are legally entitled to purchase items at the stated price, even if it is a mistake. I once got cans of creamed corn, 10 for a penny! Stated price: ".10¢" each.

In NSW if the ticketed item is incorrect it's free.

I have to be an offender. I once turned in a paper in college no less that had the word their misspelled (thier) like 35 times  .

Our personal pet peeve around here is insulting people by saying F**k you. Our general response is "No thank you." It is generally considered a good thing - not something I'm offering to someone who ticked me off.

I tend to follow this rule; however, I have seen legitimate US English grammar texts say that it is the beginning letter of the noun that determines the usage of "a" or "an". I suspect that this was some older rule that really just made no sense. So common sense prevailed, and people tend to follow the rule you sight. The only reason I mention this is because I lost points in a grammar competition for following the rule you sight. I argued with the judges, but they were able to show me 2 texts that listed the rule this way. Bastaaads I wonder if I can remember how to diagram a sentence

Yes, that is certainly one of my pet peeves. The book "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss should be required reading before anyone is allowed to paint a sign, print a notice, or even lay fingers on an internet-connected keyboard.

The one that really drives me up the wall, though, is the ever-increasing use of the phrase "one of the only" instead of "one of the few". Duh... that's equivalent to saying "one of the one". Sadly, it is one of those things that -- although ridiculous on its face -- is becoming more prevalent as folks just don't care, or even think about, what they say or write. I even hear NPR newspeople using it. Sigh...

The texture of creamed corn is different from mushy peas, because corn does not mash as uniformly or finely as peas. Plus, creamed corn seems to be, well, creamier, to me than mushy peas. The dairy in creamed corn does not mix in as well as it does with mushy peas, or mashed root vegetables, so it is more noticeable. I quite like both; however, I have only had mushy peas recently in a pub in London. Creamed corn seems to be a southern thing in the US.

Sorry, should not have been so general. it only works in supermarkets.

if an item scans at a different price at the register compared to the price on the shelf. then is free

Ok - same here. But here they don't *have* to sell it. Legally it is an offer 'to treat' - but if they do agree to sell it it has to be at the lowest locally advertised (by them) price.

I always thought the term 'I could care less' was intentional irony...

As in, if I wanted, I could go into negative territory about caring.

Like actively hating.

Is that the irony?

It seemed cool in 1988.
