So, I just did my first 600 mile oil change and I noticed a lot of metal in the oil. Big flakes, funny squiggles and flecks in the mesh filter. Is this normal? I tried the search, but it came back with thousands of hits, so i figured I'd just ask.
Thanks
Pete
ps I added 1 liter of oil, and 5 ounces gear oil, are these figures I got online correct? I only ask because I'm riding 110 miles tomorrow and do not want to fry anything.

I believe that's typical for the 1st oil change
and why it's so important

+1 It is hard to tell how much junk you have from your description, but the new engine parts are going to put out some debris as they break in

The capacity of the crankcase is listed in the owner's manual and also stamped in the metal right next to the fill port. Additional information is available on the various decals on or inside your scooter.

The metal flakes in the strainer of a new engine are normal. If you had that first service done at your dealer, they would have (should have) checked an extensive list of items that require adjustment or re-torquing. That first service is fairly important, especially in light of your trip tomorrow.

Ride safely and good luck.

Like every one has said metal is expected so not to worry. I would check both fluid levels before you head out just to make sure everything is ok. Other than that your good to go. Oh you should check your tire pressures also. I'm finding mine tend to lose more air now that it's hot here. Have a great trip

Thanks for the info. I read the manual, but on the service side all it said was "take to an authorized Vespa dealer". I have an 09 s 150. It did list what should be done on the first tune up. I adjsuted the idle, brake modulation seems good (I did not check the pads as they are new) the throttle seems good (If it needs adjusting I should be able to do this) and I replaced the oil and filter. I would have brought it to the dealer, but I could not justify giving them $200.00 1 week after I bought a $4000.00 scooter. I do the maintenance on my atv and John Deere, and I have done some work on cars (brakes, oil, exhaust, suspension...) so I feel capable of most maintence items. Am I way off here? It looks so simple.

Nope your not way off, sounds to me like your ahead of the game. I did my 1st sevice and expect to do the rest. Just see if you can find a downloadable maintance manual if you can. There is a link to the LX150, GT200 and GTS250 in the Wiki.
I called the dealer where I bought mine, and double checked with them, they said changing the gear oil, motor oil/filter and checking the fit and tightness of everything is the main purpose of the 600 mile breakin service. Since they are so far away I did not want to drive all the way up there, wait all day, or leave it and drive back up there....
