I've heard all the good things and the bad things about having a floor mat on the modern Vespas. Seen the threads that pop up every month or two, and asked my own questions. Seen pics of scoots with floor mats, and evidence that not all of them get damaged. Heard rants about those that did.

But what I have not seen are pictures of scoots that did get some damage from having a floor mat installed. Did a search, came up empty.

So those of you who hate their floor mats, please take out your cameras!

I've installed a floor mat and some debirs get caught up under the mat, but not to the point of compromising the surface of the floor board.

My scoot is a year old. Used a floormat from the beginning and yes, my floorboard is damaged. I'll post some pics tonight when I get home.

I'm posting a pic for pro-floor mat. I like mine and I've had it on my LX since Christmas. I did hose off the funk that gets under the mat, but I never get any sand or gravel that could scratch the paint.

thing is you only have to look at cars after it's rained to realise how much dirt is in the rain ready to sit under the floor mat to act as a grinding paste....

that looks like mine as well and personally I wouldn't buy it. One of my GT s came with it and if you like the look go for it and know that you will likely always have to have it on or when you tire of it you will probably have to repaint your floor, not a big deal. I have left it on as I am not prepared to repaint and I don;t have the old runners that were removed to install the floor mat. So it will stay, not a bad look IMO. It doesn suit all colours but I think it suits the dark grey.

When I bought my scooter I thought of the floor mat as something I might add later on if the floorboard started looking bad. I was a bit concerned that water would get under the floor mat and not dry quickly causing the paint to chaff; a similar effect to leaving a bra on your car all of the time. After a little over a year of use my floorboard still looks great. The floor rails do their job; they keep my feet off of the paint so I doubt I will ever install a floor mat.

The good news is that the floorboard is plastic so even though the paint may look a little rough after using a floor mat, at least it will not rust. If I already had paint damage from the floor mat or if I liked the look then I would just leave it on and not be concerned about the paint.

I had mats for my old S50 and GTS 250

But after I read about mats, I didn't bother getting one for the GTS 300

I think it is better to keep any eye on the floor board... and they don't get any more dirty without a mat. In fact, they might keep cleaner in the long run because the water dries better and the dirt gets blown away from the floor by the wind.

So, honestly, I think they are a waste of money... and the scooter looks better without one

I live in Orlando, and bought a mat with the scoot. Now all of this has me wondering if I made the right choice. I do have the original runners, so if I change my mind it should be easy enough to swith back.

This thread is bullshit.

Just because you never take off your floor mats and actually clean underneath doesn't mean the floor mat ruined your scoot floorboards. Just pull them up every once in a while and clean the boards and give them a coat of wax for God's sake. AND YOU ONLY NEED TO TAKE OFF 2 OF THE STOCK RUNNING STRIPS, THE OUTERMOST ONE ON EACH SIDE TO USE THE MAT. Why are you pulling all of them off? The Vespa floor mat really is a Great product.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with a floor mat that hasn't had any problems with it. It lays nice and flat without removing any floor board strips.

I bought the mat because I didn't like when rain water accumulated on the floor and got my jeans wet. Now, I just lift up the mat and drain all the water off.

Both Matt and I have the mats on a GT200 and GTS250. We did not take any of the rails (or whatever they are called) off and we have had no problems. We have had them on for 3 years and the floorboards look like new. We take the mat off and clean under it every month or so and put a coat of wax on it. We used them on the ET4's also with no problem. It is drier here so maybe that makes a difference and cleaning under makes a big difference also.

ET floormat is without problems. Just threw it on there, and no damage to the body after a couple years. I think I cleaned under it maybe once or twice the whole time... figure you'd clean the floorboard that much anyway over a couple of years.

I thought this might be of help to those of us still on the fence about getting a mat, so that we can actually see what we might be getting ourselves into.

Seems to me that the floormat experience is just about the way it can go with tires. Probably a lot of it depends on your location, storing the scoot outside vs. in, whether you ride in crappy weather, and how often (if at all) you clean under the mat. Maybe riding style has a little to do with it, too.

Interesting how some folks have absolutely no issues, and others end up keeping the floormat simply to hide all the damage caused by having it.

Actually none of the strips need to be removed. I'm glad I read a similar thread some time ago. I learned to check/clean under the mat.

On the 300 you do, or in the least you would have to trim out a spot for 4 holes.

You can't snip the bits off the bottom of the mat for the 300?

Has anyone contacted a dealer or Piaggio about this? I just bought a scooter with 105 miles, rode it 300 miles over three weeks, and have the same scraping issues. It's not right.

Three years of riding without a floor mat and my floor boards are still perfect. It's all about the cleaning with or without a mat.

Could be that your red color doesn't show as bad as the black. My floor board was clean when I installed the mat, and only took a few rides before I noticed the "scuffing". It must be some sort of chemical reaction between the rubber compound and the fresh paint/clearcoat. After removing the mat I have had no additional scuffs btw.

I don't have a floormat but yes red is easier to keep clean looking. I think black shows everything.
