DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Bruce Rossmeyer, owner of Daytona Harley-Davidson and Destination Daytona, was killed in a crash on Thursday, several news sources reported.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal and RoadracingWorld.com reported that Rossmeyer was killed in a motorcycle accident in Wyoming while riding from the Harley-Davidson dealer meetings in Colorado to the 69th Annual Sturgis Rally in Sturgis, S.D.

Sources said a recreational vehicle strayed into the lane in which Rossmeyer was riding and the two either collided or Rossmeyer went off the road trying to avoid the RV.

Destination Daytona said it would comment when appropriate.

Rossmeyer once told WESH 2 News that he built Destination Daytona -- the largest Harley-Davidson dealer anywhere -- as the Disney World for bikers, with shops, condos, restaurants and a hotel.

He always had a courtside seat at Orlando Magic games at the end of the visitor's bench, where he said he could keep an eye on the competition.

Orlando Magic Chief Operating Officer Alex Martins issued a statement on Rossmeyer's passing.

"Bruce Rossmeyer was a great fan, friend and sponsor of the Orlando Magic for the majority of our history," Martins said. "Our entire Magic family is shocked and terribly saddened. Our thoughts are with Bruce and his family. We will miss one of our greatest fans.‬‪"

wow, he was a icon for riders in Florida. I guess this just proves this could happen to anyone despite riding experience. Time to look into installing a Stebel again...*sigh*

That's just awful, prayers for him and his family. Look at that smile, this just isn't right.

Always a sad day when someone who has done so much passes away...thoughts to Friends and Family.

How sad. He did a lot of children's charity work in Florida.

Whilst living in Florida I had an opportunity to visit he store, WOW!

Really sad news. What I don't understand is this statement: It should be easy to tell. If they collided there would be residue/damage to the RV.

the latest is bruce and others were trying to pass a turning truck and he made contact.

An updated news article on the accident I read said the group of motorcycles Bruce was riding with started to pass on the left a truck with a camper trailer as it slowed and signaled to make a left turn. Bruce collided with the truck as it began to turn and another rider swerved to miss it. It wasn't clear if the truck signaled before the motorcycle group began to pass or not. Either way, it is an unfortunate tragedy.

It saddens me as he was a man of great character and generousity. And unlike his Harley store, he was very reserved and humble...when I heard the news last night it made me pause.

He was well known in Orlando for both his business side and his charitable work. Goodbye.

He has stores all over the place...not just the Orlando/Daytona area...he has a few here in South Florida as well...one less than 2 miles from Weston where I live....sad thing...kind of reminds me of when the relative of the founder of Ferrari died crashing into a car a couple of years ago on his Vespa.

From the police statement, the truck was signalling a left turn and the bikes behind decided to pass anyway...

I just spoke with a friend of mine and he said that the RV may have actually been the RV that was travelling with his group of riders as a support vehicle.

But that's just hearsay for the moment.

I thought it said Russ Meyer.

Anyhow that's very sad and I am sure that many will jump to the "motorcycles are unsafe" argument.
