Hi

Was wondering whether anyone knew whether it was possible to take the Vespa GTS Top Box off with no tools. I thought that it wuld be easy to take off and put on every day with no fuss but I can't seem to work out how to take it off. I'm hoping it's not fixed but it seems top be! Help anyone.......

if i recall there is a single screw at the bottom of the box that needs undoing before the box will come off.

as far as i know, only 'monolock' cases (givi and similar brands) are truly simple to remove

depends which rack you have.........

if it's the flat tea tray rack found on the "GT" then yes it's a single screw

if it's the chrome folding rack found on the "GTs" then it's 4 screws and not so simple......

I don't know if the GTS box is the same, but on my LX, there is a single screw that is accessed by lifting up the liner inside the box. It has a lift ring that is used to unscrew the retainer. Very simple and no tools required.

My neighbour had a look under the rack last night and said that there were four screws! So do I just have to unscrew them and lift the box every time I want to ride without it? Wha? emoticon

Which rack do you have?

I presume it's the folding one, which is rather tricky.

The two at the very rear of the scooter (furthest from handlebars) are the easiest, but the other two are a real bugger. I found the screws just disintigrated.

Do you still want to remove it?

see maver's post above: if you've got the chrome folding rack, then yes, i'm afraid so.

On the GTS, there are 4 nuts, then other nuts that attach the clamp. You have to remove the nuts from underneath first- these are locking nuts, and you'll need a long socket to get at these. Only then can you remove the screws from inside the top box. If you try to unscrew from inside the top-box without first removing the locking nuts underneath, you will strip the screws- then you're screwed.

There is a square nut recessed into the bottom at each of these (above the locking nut), and these may fall out once you undo the screws. Then you can undo the clamp which holds the rack flat. If you do it right you won't strip the screws, but it is not a quick and easy process. There is no way you can decide in the morning before work that you need the top-box today!

For me, i just leave it on all the time.

With the GTS folding rack it is indeed a bit of a pain. Even though the Givi topcase has a quick release, the universal plate remains on the rack and doesn't look so hot if you take the case off. Thus, even though I can remove the Givi topcase in theory, I never ride without the case on because of how the universal plate looks.

I put my topbox on and off all the time. I personally hate it as it ruins the classic lines of the Vespa, but my wife feels much safer when we ride 2-up and it's just so damn practical. I've fitted two wing-nut bolts that can be undone by hand and I keep a screwdriver handy to quickly remove the other two bolts. Whole process takes less than 2 minutes.
I seldom remove the black clamp and this just holds the rack down so I can strap items if I need to.
Only downside is the bolts now protrude into the box, so I've lined the base with acoustic foam. This prevents things from sliding around and also stops fruit from getting bruised.
