Modern Vespa

Effective immediately, the feature we've been beta testing for the last week or so is now available, and can be used on any thread.

For the uninitiated, the new feature allows you to post text and photos to the topic of your choosing just by sending an email (with optional photo attachments) to a special email address here at Modern Vespa. Each email address is unique for you and you alone, and applies only to a single topic. All you need is an email client (smartphone, anyone?) to post photos from anywhere in the world. Each photo is resized as appropriate for proper display in a web browser, so there's no need to do any processing on the photos before posting.

I originally imagined that this feature would be used primarily in the new Ride Reports section, allowing people to post notes from the field in semi-real-time, with the rest of us back home following along. It has since been pointed out, though, that this feature will completely alter the landscape of Scooter Tag. So be it.

To generate your unique email address, just click the envelope icon in the upper-right-hand corner of any topic. You'll see a page with the name of the topic, an email link, and the email address itself. Either click the email link or copy and paste the address, and then send an email with whatever photos you want to post to that topic. Within about five or ten minutes, the photos will appear, posted in your name.

That's all there is to it. I hope you all enjoy using this feature, and I look forward to seeing your photos posted in real time.

Thanks Benny, I love it ... but unfortunately, I have to wait for my mechanic to come back from vacation before I can get her on the road. It is killing me to see it just "sitting" there!

Totally cool. I just wish there were enough Torontonians on MV to play scooter tag with, that would make it a huge amount of fun. But no one wants to play.

So I believe this is a simple typo: the email address for this topic should look something like topic51259-MXXXXX. I see an email from you addressed to topic5129-MXXXXXX (where the XXXXX is your unique part, which I'm not giving away).

Add one more 5 to that email address and it should work.

Will try again.

Oh, that was never certain. We shook out a bunch of bugs last week, but I don't have any doubt that there are more lurking. Email processing is far more difficult than I could have imagined.

Nice feature, many possibilities opened up. Near real-time troubleshooting thru text and pics comes to mind... way to go, Jes.

I got nuthin'. I don't see any recent email from you, either being processed, already processed, or rejected.

Sure you've got the address right?

I clicked on the icon from my G1. It gave me an address which I highlighted and sent as an email. Maaaaybe I should've not relied on the ol' Google phone to highlight the address correctly. I'll try again.

One thing to note when posting from a phone with GPS is that the location is added to the photo. While this is a good thing when posting while on a ride it will make scooter tag a bit too easy.

On the iPhone you can turn off location services before taking the photo to keep the info out of there.

Into an invisible box?

I swear when you first use the camera it asks for location services. I can't figure out how to go back and change the settig aside from literally turning them off globally for all apps. Any ideas?
