I've just switched on a new feature here in the Ride Reports section: Locations!

Effective immediately, the post-by-email feature will extract GPS location data from any photos posted to a topic here in Ride Reports. That location information will be stored in the database and shown on a Google map at the end of the thread.

Note that this feature applies only to photos posted by email, and only to topics in Ride Reports. Please be aware that photos taken at your home will reveal where you live, so if you want to retain your privacy, please do not email photos taken at your home to the Ride Reports section.

This is a brand-new feature, and there are bound to be some bugs. Please help me test this feature by posting photos with GPS data (such as those taken with a smart phone) to this topic. If you've never done it before, just click the envelope icon in the upper-right corner of this topic to generate a unique email address, and email any geotagged photo to that address.

Please try and avoid sending geotagged photos that reveal a location that you'd rather not publish on the internet, such as your home.

Great feature, Jess... An issue I've found (and I don't know if this is in the code or if it's my computer) is that when scrolling down the page using the scroll button on my (Mac) mouse, the cursor changes from an arrow to a hand once the map scrolls into view. From there, the scrolling stops and I'm zooming out (or in, if scrolling up) on the map when the cursor is over the map. I would expect to have to click on the map to interact with it, but maybe this isn't an option with it embedded in the post.

That's a function of Google Maps. For reasons known only to them, they've decided to implement zoom in response to scroll events. As soon as the mouse cursor is over the map, scroll becomes zoom. It is very annoying.

Sadly, I believe I'm powerless to do anything about it.

I understand. We will all just have to learn to move our cursors over to the far right of the screen when scrolling down to keep the cursor over the slider bar (?) and not over the map.

Well, that brings up a very good point. I made the map almost as wide as the window, which gives you almost no room to scroll to the bottom without hitting the map. Perhaps if I brought the edges in some it would provide more room on the side, and you wouldn't always hit the map.

That worked much better.

And note that the map is centered on the image with the most recent timestamp. Unfortunately, it looks as though the timestamp on your picture is today, meaning that I'm not grabbing the right timestamp from the photo.

I think that could definitely help. The "capture rate," if you will, of the scroll button's speed on Google Maps is high - in other words, it doesn't take much movement of the finger to go from zoomed all the way in on a given locale to looking at things from outer space. A little more room on the sides would help not only to reduce accidental zoom-outs, but from an aesthetic point of view, better frame the map within the confines of the page.

There's only one map, and it's not part of any post -- it's just at the bottom of the thread, always. All photos, if they have location data in them, will get a marker on the single map.

Hah! Solved this problem. It turns out that, when embedding your own map, you can disable the scroll wheel function. Which I've now done.

So the only way to zoom in and out is by double clicking or using the zoom slider at the right. I'm good with that.

Another small tweak: when the map first loads, it will now attempt to scale itself such that the entire set of markers for that map is visible. If we get a big map with a lot of markers from all over the world, it will undoubtedly zoom out ridiculously far. I'm okay with that, though. Most of the time, a ride will be confined to a single continent.

My not so smart smartphone does not have the gps tags. Can I add them after the fact? How about the ones from my camera?

I know that is not an MV question, but I am willing to put in a bit of elbow grease to get to use this feature.

You certainly can. The "how" depends a lot on the specifics of your OS platform, and what tools you have available. I'm in the process of geotagging a couple of my Cannonball images as we speak.

Kick ass. You rock.

btw, if anyone else is using Picasa and Google Earth, just highlight the photos in Picasa, Tools menu, Geotag...Geotag With Google Earth.

Pretty easy and you can multi select each location.

Peace all.

Now I have to decide if I want to redo that whole Ride Report. Maybe I will just need to do another trip .

It would be really cool if the tag would work with the embedded images.
