Do you think Dennis Kinney, Ph.D would be kind enough to provide some figures of how many people have actually died from wearing flip flops? And flip flops have been around for how many years now?
I get thoroughly fed up with report after report that tells us how dangerous everything in the world is. |

Rinsing my feet and flip flops pretty much guarantees this sort of thing won't happen and it takes me what ... maybe 1 minute per day! No biggie mon! |

I don't understand this article. They call it "The Hidden Dangers of Flip-Flops", then throw something at the end of it saying its not just flip-flops, but all shoes that have this problem.
What's the difference between flip-flops and any other open shoes? I really think reporters are getting stupid. I wear shoes as little as possible. Seriously... I hate shoes. I always wear boots while riding, but any other time I try to get away without them. I walk around work barefoot, home, sometimes outside my home (patio, porch, yard, etc), otherwise I'm wearing flip-flops. I haven't died yet, and I've been doing that for years. When I'm in public places, I try to keep them on though, so I'm not completely nutters. |

It's very poor science (or very poor science reporting). They should show how many cells started off on the feet and then the difference under the same conditions when wearing all types of footwear. I bet wandering around NY in motorcycle boots for 4 days will cause a few interesting bacteria to grow. I'm also not sure that 18k bacterial cells is very much either - the human body on average contains roughly 10 to the power 14 (that's 1,000,000,000,000,000 bacterial cells) bacterial cells as opposed to human cells so I guess the flip flops don't make that much difference.
The world is naturally inhabited by bacteria and we're certainly on to a loosing battle if we want to kill them all. Whether it's a safe thing to ride about in your flip flops is another question but I've been going everywhere in mine for months, I just kind of like the wind between my toes. |

Filler article. Duh. PS: I never wear flip flops when riding. If I did, I'd have a lot more to worry about than bacteria. |

I think that Dennis Kinney must have really ugly feet.
![]() All I wear are flip-flops (not to ride in, you have more things to worry about than fungus), and I seem to be doing just fine. I suggest pedicures as no one needs so see nasty toes, and to throw the flip-flops in the washing machine periodically, something you can't do with expensive shoes. |

I think after reading this article that I need to switch to flip flops ... just to give my immune system more of the practice it needs.
Hiding from germs can be dangerous to your health, I believe. |

Must have been a slow news day. These are mostly all bacteria that we are likely to encounter every day. People get staph infections because the bacterium is so common, not because it is so rare. Good argument for leaving your shoes by the door when you go inside though.

According to Wikipedia, Staphylococcus aureus frequently occurs in the nose (about 30% of the population) and about 20% of the population are long-term carriers. Maybe it's contact with other people that should be avoided and not wearing flip-flops.

And now for something completely different...
It's no surprise that the streets are contaminated with bacteria of all species, fungi (including Aspergillis) and spores from yeasts and molds (Candida anyone?). After all most folks don't curb their dogs, and lets not forget those pesky Canada geese crapping everywhere, nevermind the pigeons.
If you are healthy and wash your hands you have nothing to fear but fear itself. Most people do not remove their shoes when they enter their house, unless you live in Japan. I think the primary danger from flip-flops on scoots is the lack of foot protection. Can you say, skin grafts, avulsions or traumatic amputation? Lets worry about the more immediate dangers like obesity, heart disease and diabetes, crazy drivers and influenza. |

RUN!!!! FIRE!!!! GERMS!!!
Did you know the world is full of germs and bacteria. Funny thing is the article mentions all of the bad things flips flops can get. Of courses, flip flops are as close to nothing on your feet as you can get. Then the author mentions shoes get full of the germs to. If the article actually has some value, it would give the reader some suggestions about what you can do to reduce your risks. Like--- what you should clean, how often, how to clean, products to use the actually help and not move the problems around. or at least where to find these suggestions. It looks to me like it as designed to fill a space in the newspaper and not actually be of any use to any one. |

I thought this was going to warn people of the danger of losing toes from scraping your feet on the pavement should you happen to wipe out while riding with flip flops on.
I cringe at the thought of this whenever I see someone riding with open footwear. |

If you're so worried about flip-floops, why not go barefoot?
I never wear them because they don't stay on my feet, but I wear sandals a lot in summer. Why wear anything on your feet on the beach? Are your beaches contaminated with broken glass and syringes? Then you'd better come to Sydney. Only the ocasional bluebotttle here! Mike |
