Hey guys,

So I have an appointment in a couple weeks at the local DMV to get the following done:

1. Transfer license to CA
2. Register GTS and PX200 (registered as '83) in CA - both are currently registered in VT.

I think I know about all the items I need for #1 - need to take a test, etc. But I'm thoroughly confused as to what I need to do #2. Do I have to have them checked for smog before or after I go into the DMV? Can I do it before?

I"m just confused on the timing of everything - I really want to minimize my time in the DMV and would LOVE to avoid having to go multiple times.

Any help would be appreciated.

There are no smog checks on PTWs (yet), so no need to worry about that.

What he said. You just bring your old vehicle title and registration, and pay the fee to get it transferred to CA.

Most modern Vespas are sold CARB (California Air Resources Board) approved in the US in all 50 states. Too expensive to have two different production lines. And your vintage scoot would have been considered as 'grandfathered' in the same way vintage cars are.

The PX200 was never sold in CA or anywhere else in the US for that matter.
It's not CARB approved, but that's okay.

If it's registered in VT (especially as an '83-nice going there!) and has been for over a year, you'll have no problem registering it in CA. Just bring all your paperwork and you'll be fine. There are a few CA-registerd PX200s out there but according to the owners I've spoken to, I think they're all registered as different years or P200s or whatever fits in the CA DMV database.

Vehicles with over 7500+ miles on the odometer are CARB-exempt. A lot of PXs and Stellas get registered in CA with 7501 miles. Imagine that!
Also, vehicles over four model years old are exempt. (Finally found the reference for that in the state code!)

Here's the official DMV page on registering a non-resident vehicle. There's also a link to the form you need to bring with you.

Also, be prepared to have to show the engine number while you're at the DMV. I moved here from Chicago with one of my ET4s and 3 cars. FUN TIMES. Since they're new to the state, the need to match the engine number to the title, or even document it for the first time and list it on the new title you will get in the mail.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT whatever you need to do, and print necessary forms from online and fill out before hand. Saves and unreal amount of time and energy. Trust me, having 6 vehicles registered in CA, I know the drill.

Exactly - shit like this is exactly why I started this thread!!!!!!

Do I need to document engine number for both PX and GTS?

I lived in CA for 30 years and bought several bikes "out of state". Yes, you have to take every vehicle to the DMV for someone to verify the numbers. Make a separate appointment for each vehicle or rent a trailer and take both at the same time.
