I distinctly remember an advertisement/poster in a back issue of Scoot! Quarterly that had a picture of a rusted out older Vespa and the caption of "worth a tetanus shot."

there's that one and the VS5 in parts on Scoot.net today. Same price. I was trying to decide which would be a better project. Are the wide body GS bikes just pretty but not terribly road worthy?

The GS160 is worth more than a GS150... DEPENDING on which GS150 it is. THe GS150 VS1 ( the first year of it's production ) is worth a damn fortune.

The GS160 is worth more than a GS150 VS5 ( the last production iteration ) which had higher production numbers and ran for a number of years ('58 - 61' ? )

I don't know that GS160's SHOULD be worth more ... but i see them command higher prices on average.

You're good! And I'm not above stealing a good line!

I ran across that add when I won an old Scoot Mag as part of a Raffle prize at sleep away camp.

Actually that issue had some great engine teardown tips. It was like part 2 of 3 or something like that. I ordered the other issues for $2 each and there are some great tips on all sorts of stuff.

Scoot ATL Post
Report this postReply with quote The grapes have grown sour in one day
by Orbiterdictum » Tue Sep 01, 2009 6:27 pm

Yesterday I saw an add for an "old scooter" on craigslist. I had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. Because I have been fostering a purchase of a GS160 for the last three months.

It was fate, I'm not kidding, fate. I was walking into Barns & Nobel only one day after coming to the idea that I should sell my scooter to buy something more project like. When a nice old man asks me questions about my scooter, and explains that he has an old one he purchased for $450 from a barn. After flipping through A series of pictures he stops and points at a Mk. 2. Well I quickly call him up and say that I want to buy it for a grand. After a month of waiting he finally gets it here (after bringing it from Illinois), but sadly I wasn't prepared because no one would purchase my Super 150. After a week and a half the add shows up early yesterday. Around 10pm I can't stand it any more, I call him up and ask him if it's the one he promised to sell me.

Let me say here that he didn't just say he would sell it to me, he promised not to put it up for sale without calling me, he said that I had the "first chance at it." and assured me he wouldn't do anything, and that it wasn't in the way. I kept in touch over the week as I tried to sell the scooter, and he seemed unbothered by it.

Well when I found out that he had posted it I was upset, very upset. I called and explained the love I had for that scooter, that I wanted to ride away on that scooter at my wedding! THAT WAS THE PLAN! My wedding car! I was planning to ride a bike over the winter, just so I could get home and work inside on this scooter.

I offered him $200 more, I begged. I went to the bank and got the money and risking that I wouldn't be able to pay rent today, I rode my scooter an hour and a half to Jonesburo and called him at 8am telling him that I was ready to pay now, and take it home within the morning. He still said "I just want to see how this plays out", to which I replied "by saying that you are telling me I won't get the scooter, that everything I've done is a waste." This still failed to phase him, and I had a lovely ride in the morning rain on a one lane road with angry drivers by the Atlanta dump.

After a short hour nap I called him up and might have been insulting. I asked him very calmly why he lied. He said "No one is lying" "But you said your wife put it on craigslist for you, either you where told that this would happen, and you didn't tell her, or call me like you promised. Or your wife did it without telling you, lying by omitting information from both of us." At this point the phone call ended, likely by him hanging up, though his voice never left the "amiable old man" voice.

At this point I know I will never see that Vespa again, and if I do I will be so angry that I will hate any of you who get it. I'm going to do my best not to let this ruin scooters for me, but... It's hard. The grapes are sour, and I will never find anything as good as that again. People wait years for something like that.

Also I have prepared the Super to be sold, and am in fairly deep on my repair bills, so I can't back out on selling it. So when someone does eventually buy it I'm out of the game, the ledge I jumped for is gone. That being said, please tell your friends, it has a 12v conversion, and very nice stock paint. Asking $1700.

No smilie can express my sorrow.
...As Mister Magbee was saying before he was most rudely interrupted

I hope the thing rusts away in his front drive after reading this guys post. This scooter thing is suppose to be fun not how much profit I can make off you. Profit is cool but when we have a deal, its a deal. I bet this guy will have a hard time finding someone to help him restore it if it dosent sell. He should just sell it to the first guy. It sounds like karma the stars were aligned to find the bike he always wanted.

Another scooter will always come along............. It's a fact.

I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. If that guy didn't have enough $$ handy to buy it right away he shouldn't expect someone to save it for him no matter what they say. If he needs that $$ to pay his rent he certainly doesn't need to be worrying about buying a Scooter.

Yeah, I mean it IS a GS160 and all, but it's not a very nice GS160... that guy who got screwed out of buying it was kinda building it up for himself into something great that it is not. You'd want to put a LOT O work into that before it was your official wedding limo

But yes, back to the seller... he sounds sucky
