I live in an area close to Little Sigon, "westminster CA" when I ride in that area they can't stop looking and smiling at it. most of the guys who ask about it road a scooter in the home country.

Hennry, Scooters are old hat to the Asian Countrys and Europe. we as Americans are the last to catch on to the Cycle craze.

Wondering whether it has something to do with the widespread use of Vespas in Viet Nam and Thailand during the 1960s and their continued presence as frankenscooters...

I don't think Vietnam has singled out the west as a dumping ground for old scooters. They've used ingenuity to keep them on the road for the last three decades without access to original parts; in the same way that the Cubans are still (barely) running 1950s American cars. These scooters aren't thrown together with the western market in mind; but a few of the companies in Vietnam who ship them over, have a westerner at the helm. Somebody who knows that they can make a fast buck. The Vietnamese don't care about having a mishmash of parts. They just want something that works.

TEABOY. i'm not being negative about vietnam. I was totally surprised on how many new automatic vespa's there were. HCMC had more in one day than i have ever seen in person here in hawaii. I mean brand new. Most of the scooters there were honda's but in the big cities where people had more money they had what we have. All the more power to them if they sell them outside the country. That being said if their wasn't a market for them i doubt we would have them or as many. I also think piaggio is going to open a plant there in the near future. Smart move on their part. IMHO The Chinese don't even buy what they export. I asked many people if they would buy a Chinese scooter when i was there, they laughed and said Taiwan or Japan is where they buy them from.

Vietnamese always hit me up in my nieghborhood, they tell me how they owned a Vespa and/or Lambretta when they were young, its totally cool because they light up when they talk about it.

I love to hear their stories and talk with them.

Ummm... I'm an asian guy and I like Vespa because

1. I'm a normal human being like everyone else.
2. I have good taste.

I guess actually interacting with asians or immigrants in DC must be a novelty of sorts.

My Italian neighbor and his wife like my Vespa too. I should make a forum posting about it.

Silly.

Scooterhenry's post has been converted to txt speak?

To be honest, I don't think he meant to stereotype or insult, I believe it was more of a true if rather abrupt, observation of a vague demograph.

But the exact thing happened to me today, I was coming out of a farm shop and there was an old Indian man admiring my scooter, we chatted, apparently he had one when back in India when he was younger then upgraded to a Honda moped . It was a positive experience and I'm glad we got a chance to speak.

I've also found disproportional interest levels from other groups like Jaguar drivers and Harley riders.

If peoples is talking, it's gotta be good 8)

Oh come on..... I didn't think that post was all that bad....

I didn't see anyone get "butt hurt" over the post about OLD PEOPLE admiring scooters!

It's just an observation.

My Italian friends like my scooter. My Greek friends like my scooter. My Harley friends like my scooter. My Phillipino (sp?) neighbors like my scooter. My Thai friends like my scooter. My Chinese dentist likes my scooter. My black hair dresser, neighbors, brother in law, and nephews like my scooter. My native american co workers like my scooter. The old guy that uses a lawn mower as a walker in my neighborhood likes my scooter. My white UPS driver likes my scooter. My Haitian Dr. likes my scooter. The Spanish people at work like my scooter. My Indian friends like my scooter. Heck even some of the sober rednecks down here like my scooter.

Did I miss any specific group?

If we treat everyone equally no one can be offended... right... I guess that's how we have to be in this overly politically correct world....

So, how long will it take for the OP to get out of this double neg rating, due to a simple observation? At least he was courteous enough to say "Asians" rather than generalize and call them all Chinese, as many ignorant people would.

I was working in Downtown DC, China town at 7th and H last week. I received more positive comments about my scooter there than any where else. In fact, when my Taiwanese sister in law found out I got a scooter she called me and went on for hours about her scooters as a young girl/woman in Taiwan.

Heck even my Italian friends in Arlington egg me on and tell me to dump the scooter and get a Ducati. The only thing they use scooters for are as props for their store/ restaurant.

is using the term asian wrong? i'm confused...if italian was substituted for asian in the title would it be offensive? think about it. i am trained in cultural competance and sometimes the people on here think EVERYTHING is racist.
oriental is considered outdated and racist, but asian is a term to define a race.

Just to be clear, the disemvowelling was carried out automatically by the forum, in response to an unusually high number of negative ratings on that specific post. None of the moderator staff was singling his post out in any way.

I guess that the way the post was phrased came off wrong to some...

Unwarranted or not, the post garnered a pretty fair number of negative votes, all from different people. This was not a case of abuse, or a moderator making a judgement call. This was a group of users letting it be known that they found it obnoxious.

Sorry. That's how it's supposed to work. I don't expect everyone to agree with the assessment, but enough people clearly found it obnoxious that it was automatically disemvowelled.
