So, finally got around to buying a flyscreen for the GTS. I figured since I had already instaleld a full windscreen, this should be no problem. Everything went great until one of the screws wouldn't go into the screen bracket thing. The actual metal thing (the metal thing that goes around the rod and the screw inserts into) was defective - the threading was such that the screw would only go in kinda sideways. I tried all four screws on it and I could not get any of them to go in straight.

So i did the dumb thing - i tried to just muscle a screw in and freakin stripped the hex screw. Awesome - so now one of the clamps isn't really on and I can't get the screw off. I assume I could use vice grips to get the screw off, but where can i get a new metal thing (what do you call this?) and screw?

See attached for my handy work...

gah. if it doesn't wanna go, don't force it!!! ... yeah, i know, you already knew that...

when i need random little parts my first stop is always my local vespa dealership. they always seem to have bits and pieces floating around. if they don't have it in stock i'm sure it can be ordered.

Hah, thanks genie. I completely knew not to force it but I was thinking "F-CK it, the piece is defective anyways. Might as well just try and force it on". Same result I guess - I need to get a new one.

Can you really get these parts? they seem so random - I'd have to have to order 4 more just for 1!

Return the whole kit to the place you bought it from and ask for a replacement of the entire package. That is usually quicker than trying to find parts piece-meal.

my experience is that these sort of parts are not as random as you might think. dealers often have little bits and pieces hanging around - after all, they probably install quite a few of these every month and have stripped their fair share of bolts - if they are smart they will also hang onto the hardware of broken screens that they've removed and/or replaced.

i'm also aware that parts inventory is quite a different matter in the states than it is here, so my advice may be totally off the mark, but a dealer or workshop is still the first place i'd try - much simpler than sending the whole kit back, and still cheaper even if they charge you a few dollars for the part.

Ohhhh I'm sorry for you. Looks like this is not a Vespa brand screen? My off-brand windscreen mounting hardware that was mostly plastic, fell apart in the first year of use and as a temporary fix, the guys at Vespa of Charlotte used black bolts and metal washers they had lying around the shop to fix it. Since our other bike had a Vespa screen and really nice-looking hardware, I inquired about those as a replacement. Well, they had to order the mounting hardware kit-$40 or so-or I could just buy a whole new Vespa shield. After riding around for a while, I ordered the Vespa hardware. Well, two sets of mounting hardware came in and both didn't have the chrome front mounts that the bolts go through to hold the screen in place. Finally, on the third order, I hit paydirt-until I got home. The top mounting hardware did not fit on the mounting bars coming out of the scooter. Luckily, I had two extras from the original Vespa flyscreen that were larger and I got it all put together. So, I guess I'm telling you to be patient if you order the parts and be sure they will fit your screen. That's $40 and a whole lot of patience. Good Luck.

Get the hex screw out of the clamp by any means necessary and then re-tap the screw thread one size larger. Hex screws are available in many sizes, but you may have difficulty locating another clamp.

Ugh, that's a pain in the ass. I would ask my dealership if you have a good relationship with them if they have any of the parts lying around that might work for you. There are often scooters that were in accidents and written off, however, accessories from those scooters might still be functional. Good luck.

When I was installing my first windscreen, I didn't do a good job of tightening it and, during the first trip out, it rattled lose and I ended up losing a part of the sleeve assembly. I called Brad at Vespa Eastside and he had a box of windscreen parts. He had exactly the bit I needed.

To get the screw out, that is a job for a screw extractor ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DNNCf5Avew or a tap and die set ... depending upon how hard it is to get out.

As for finding the right parts, I agree, go to your Vespa dealer or any motorcycle place and see what they have kicking around.

Good luck!

is there any chance various windscreen install instructions (ideally with pics!) will show up in the tech forums?

These things sure seem vexing.
I am dreading installing my Faco mid size next week.

If you have a Dremel you can cut a slot in the screw head with a cutoff wheel to remove the screw with a flat screwdriver , then do like teaboy said and rethread the hole. You may be able to clean up the threads with the same size tap or you may have to go a size larger like he said.
