Doesn't matter if you have a siren, flashing lights, and a bright yellow neon vest, do not expect anyone to see you! I thought I would share to spread some awareness of how oblivious some drivers are out there.
BE SAFE EVERYONE!

That hurt to watch... I am glad I ride like I am invisable so I do not assume that they see me...
Just hind site but he should have hit the throttle and took off trying to stay in his lane.. might have worked out better for him. Looked like he ended up jumping into the path of the 1st car... I will assume he is dead.. my feelings go out to any family he had.

Oblivious?

From the looks of it, he pulled directly into the path of fast-moving traffic and stopped. Those big trucks need time to break, and it looks like the driver had no choice but to switch lanes to get out of the way. The truck blocked the view of the car travelling behind him, which then hit the motorcycle.

The only thing I get from this video is don't pull out into traffic on the freeway and stop. And I sure didn't need to see someone killed to understand that isn't a good idea.

If the guy in the yellow car was paying ANY Attention what so ever he would have seen the cop and had time to completely stop none the less just change lanes.

I agree Alice. The truck was blocking the view of the cop from any and all drivers behind him. I counted 3 seconds between the time I could see the yellow car and when he hit the cop. The driver may have had four seconds from when he saw the cop until the impact ... but I would say that unfortunately, the cop brought on his own misfortune.

Very sad.

I agree with Alice,
The cop on the bike was at fault. Who in their right mind
would pull out in traffic and stop, he should have put cones
out. If you think someone could have prevented it it would
have been the cop. Now if you think I am wrong, then you
go pull out in traffic and stop and wait and see what your
chances are. Wha? emoticon

That is not how I see it, Wayne. That traffic was moving very fast. Regardless, as a motorcycle rider, one thing I've heard over and over and over again is "act like the others drivers can't see you." Besides, since when are drivers of vehicles paying 100% attention to what is going on? If that were the case, most accidents wouldn't happen. If you'll notice, the car behind the yellow car also crashed into the motorcycle, and the other cars behind that one crashed into each other. Obviously, none of them could see what was going on ahead in time to stop.

A side note to rally goers, Just because another rider is blocking an intersection, don't count on it being safe to blow through. I've seen way too many riders blow through blocked intersections without even looking. Not wise! And I agree. What was the cop thinking?

So sad. I agree with alice and wonder why would he opt to stand in front of an oncoming truck. Since the truck needs time to stop and it could of rolled when he had to make the quick lane change to avoid hitting the cop. Edited for english Time to get coffee to wake up

i am going to ring in on this one..

As a law enforcement officer, YOU HAVE TO DO things normal people won't and can't do. DO you think car stops are safe when an officer gets out? Do you think it is safe when an officer has to direct traffic in an intersection? IT IS NOT. It is unfortunate what happened. It really is no ones fault. I have had to pull onto busy interstates and help block traffic lanes... it ain't fun in a police car!!!!

I wouldn't blame the car driver because as a few had said he probably didn't have enough time to see and react. plus had a ton of traffic behind him. just remember he had to block traffic, You could be at a traffic signal waiting. I have had it happen to me before. waiting for a train to cross the intersection and a mid-size SUV plow into the rear of my kawasaki vulcan.

No disrespect to the law enforcement community, but just because someone is a police officer doesn't mean they can't be at fault for causing an accident.

I don't understand what the cop was trying to achieve - the road looked like a simple slipway on to a motorway so why didn't he (and the rest of the group) just join the motorway as most drivers would?

Stopping the traffic suddenly is insane - I'm not sure if the lorry was trying to avoid the cop or whether he was trying to block both lanes to stop others from hitting him. Sadly the people following the lorry don't even have the advantage of seeing the flashing warning light - they just go from doing 70 mph to 0 with no warning - if they manage to brake in time then have to pray the car behind can do the same.

Sure the guy who hit him is partially to blame for not paying full attention to the road but parking in the middle of a motorway is foolish, it's likely to cause a pile up and it doesn't get the payload to the destination any faster. Fail!

Why, fortunately, was there an emergency vehicle right at the scene??

Was this staged or was the cop trying to halt traffic so the emergency vehicle could enter unrestricted??

Not sure why a police officer would try to stop traffic to let an ambulance get on the highway unless there was a bad accident further down the road and he was trying to get traffic stopped in order to start detouring them up the on ramp. Poor guy. Hope he made it.

we all assume that we know whats really going on

the mind set of officer(this is his job)

the incident(there may or may not have been a need to get over to the #1 lane for a critical call(maybe a scooterist down in the 1 or 2 or 3 lane up ahead)

i have watched it enough to get over the knee jerk reaction period and he was doing what he needed to(the intent is clear)

safe or not safe is observational at best

he is a skilled biker and that was his call

now to add to the suggestion box, if doable, would have been what is called a rolling traffic block

you enter many exits prior and begin a controlled traffic blockeventually halting all moving vehicles

this can be done in a matter of an 1/8th of a mile

so if there was an on ramp prior to that one he or she would enter weaving and slowing the entire flow of traffic up to the incoming emergency vehicles Nerd emoticon

(what really should have occured is the truck driver should have come to a complete stop regardless)imo

First, there was a camera... Not a traffic camera... Evidence it was staged.

Second, there isn't a motorcop in the world that would park/stop his bike and stay on it to divert traffic. As told by my college buddy, a motorcop in Oakland, protocol would be to drive slowly in a zig zag motion, use flares, etc. But they would never, ever, ever stay on the bike like that.

Third, this looks real but is fake

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QGyljhDU84

It's not done by the best in hollywood. Just some kids with a video camera and a computer. It looks real but is fake.

If you still want to believe that the cop video is real, PM me your phone number. I sell real estate on the side and have a great deal for you!

It's very poor for people to post fake videos on the net and say they're real but it's equally poor to unequivocally say that something is fake when you have no real proof - your only proof that it was staged was simply because it was caught on video and that your mate thought it was a foolish manoeuvre??? I'm guessing you don't believe we landed on the moon either. I'm not saying that the video couldn't of been faked but I certainly want better evidence than that.

I did try and find news articles regards police motorcycle crashes in the US (the voice sounded American) but there wasn't enough details to really go on. I did find no end of accidents regards police escorts though - this article pointed out 3 deaths in 15 months just doing presidential motorcades alone!

Only proof? What about "As told by my college buddy, a motorcop in Oakland, protocol would be to drive slowly in a zig zag motion, use flares, etc. But they would never, ever, ever stay on the bike like that.". Since then, I checked with a co-workers husband who is a motorcop for CHP. No way would that ever happen.

Mike- Like I said. I sell real estate (in UK too). PM me your # and I'll give you the deal of a century. I also have information about how you might have one the Liberian Lottery! You just one one bazillion pounds!

But that isn't proof Chris. You can say you don't believe it to be true - which is fine - but you can't just say something is definitely fake simply because you and your mate don't believe it. We can all see that it was a stupid thing to do and (assuming it's not fake and the guy survived) I'm sure the cop probably has his doubts about the manoeuvre to. I'll pass on the lottery ticket but thanks for the kind offer

I think it is rather apparent that this is not a North American video!

The painted solid white triangle, the truck with the big "XF" on it (which is a Dutch built truck made by Daf), the size of the vehicles (too small to be North American), the bicycle path running parallel to the highway, the police whistle, the yellow (Mercedes) ambulance, the highway markers ... all lead me to believe this took place in Holland.

So I did a little digging and this is what I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17HxmXVBJwE

Police Officer on Motor Bike Gets Hit While Redirecting Traffic

Ahhhh the Dutch! Makes sense.

It is just a giant incredbile coincidence that someone happened to be filming that exact spot at that exact time when the Dutch cop decided to pull his bike in front of traffic and remain on the bike to divert traffic (instead of using flares, signs, or whatever).

If it's on the internet, it must be true?
