Hi all,

Some information about Vespa here in Vietnam I liked to share...

Due to the success of the Vespa model in Vietnam, since this year, Piaggio has started the production of Vespas locally. All the components come from Italy, but they assemble it all here.

This country tax highly anything coming from outside and now, with the local manufacture you can get one at a reasonable price, 3650USD for the LX125. The same model 'made in Italy' would cost around 5500USD and 7500 for the GTS (you don't like to know how much it is a car here).

As the manufacture here is relatively recent I am not sure if the 2000 USD difference is worth to give it a try...

I post here two links you may like to see:

Factory of Vespa in Vietnam:

Vietnamese models promoting the new Vespa produced locally (A good reason to give a try to the local Vespa):

Cheers,
Dani.

Dani,
Welcome to MV. I hope you find lots of good info and people here.
I'm really impressed by the Vietnamese factory. Very clean and precision looking.

I wonder if a local dealer in NE Ohio, USA will showcase new Vespas in this manner?

I don't think it will be exported. I would say they just produce it only for internal use.
It says somewhere that it is 'adapted' to the local market, by making it 3 cm shorter, from 1800mm to 1770mm. I don' t know if it makes much difference...

BTW, what is MSRP?

MSRP=manufacturer's suggested retail price. Smart of piaggio to put a plant there since there were a lot of modern vespa's on the streets when i was there a few years ago. aloha and welcome to the forum.

I know there is no such thing anymore, but is the factory in "north" or "south" Vietnam? Just for reference purposes.

It's in the North, in Vinh Phuc province, near Ha Noi.
I should go up there, buy it and then come back to Saigon riding it!

Hmmmm, I am now wondering if my new LX125 was built in Viet Nam. The reason I ask is because I am able to ride it with the stock seat! I couldn't do that with the other two! I wonder if there is any way to tell for sure?

That's a smart looking factory. Now that Piaggio can sell cheaper bikes throughout ASEAN they can start to take some of the business back from the big four.

DAN now that i think of it i did see more modern vespa's in Ha Noi than Saigon. I would do the trip since i would love to come back over and ride north to south. I did parts of Vietnam on 2 wheels (rode on back) and had a blast.

Yes, there is more money in the North than in the South.

An average Vietnamese salary is like 150USD/month and a new Vietnamese LX125 is 3600USD but they will produce 100.000 new Vespas every year (the scooter units in the street increases every year in two million units).
The Italian ones, the one you saw are sold around 5400USD for the LX125, but you can buy a scooter starting from 200 USD, bad bad bad one...

Spent 10 days in Saigon and southern Vietnam in July. I saw very few Vespas and relatively few scooters as I would define them. There were seemingly millions of underbone motorcycles(chain drive, foot pegs, step through frames) like the Honda passport. Most of the scooters I saw were Syms. They do an LX clone that was pretty popular.

I had a great time and would love to go back. Very cool to be in a place where 2 wheel transport is king.
This was valet parking in downtown Saigon
