And it's less about an age and more about how safely you can do it - eg hold the bike up, see, react, etc.

It was 1 week ago.

My first scooter 14, a Yamaha Jog (50cc). I still wonder how my parents agreed to buy for me that beauty.
That time in Spain you could drive anything under 50cc with only 14 after passing a basic questions exam; I will never forget one of the questions: Is beer considered an alcoholic drink?

Really, the 1st time I truley rode a scooter, I was 66. Been riding motorcycles for 37 years. Wanted a Vespa for 55 years, and finally got one. I wish I had not waited so long!!

First time for me on a scooter is 46.

12 - It was a Suzuki FS50. I pretty much only rode it on gravel, dirt, and extremely small town roads. I didn't have a license.

I didn't start riding again until this Spring, at age 36.

Ha, got you beat I was 2, but tricycles don't coun't. If it was those paddle shaped things with only foot power/brakes then1 1/2.

As far as scooters as we know them 55. Bought one as a present to myself to put on a boat for transport around towns. Honda Metro.
Han't ridden in close to 30 years. The Metro gave me the bug and commited me to the twist and go. FOREVER
Limit: ? There's no stinking limit- or until the body can't get to the garage I supose.

The wife and I bought a pair of used GT200s and are loving them.

Doe a Honda QA50 count? Not technically a scooter, with an automatic clutch and 2-speed gearbox, but I had when I was eleven (11)!

12-13 at a uncles cabin. 3 gears but I don't remember how I shifted on it.

First pillion ride at about age 6 (1948) on my Dad's Cushman.

Rode the next door neighbor's Cushman at age 14 or so (1956) around our neighborhood on a couple of occasions.

Began riding legally on my uncle's Vespa in 1958, and used it quite often for the next few years.

Finally bought my own in 1964 (1962 VNB) and rode that (amongst others) until 2005, when we sold it prior to moving to Greece.

I enjoy the riding Vespa more than the Honda, but miss the Honda's power.

Age 15 to 17 ... until my boyfriend was sadly killed in a car accident together with his parents. (He owned the Vespa.)

Next time I rode was at age 54 when I bought my first scooter!

First time on a motorscooter (that's for Jim) was age of 56.

First time on a motorcycle was the age of 16.

So not a new thing, just a change of direction. I plan to continue riding as long as I can still get on and off the thing.

When I was eleven years old, a neighbor (age 14) had a Sears Allstate scooter. He let me ride it on a nearby backroad that had very little traffic. My parents would have had a fit had they known. I always wanted a scooter from the first time I rode but never owned one until last year at the ripe old age of 60. The day after I got out of the Navy (Sept/1969/my 21st birthday), the first thing I bought was a used, Yamaha motorcycle. From that point forward, I have always owned a minimum of one motorcycle (sometimes, as many as eight at a time). I will ride until I can't physically ride anymore.

I sold all of my motorcycles when I got into scooters but recently, the bug has bitten me again so tomorrow, I'm driving to the Charlotte, NC area to pick up a 1981 BMW R100.

First time I rode a motorcycle (Yam DT50) I was 15, with no problems.

First time I rode a scooter (Velocifero) I was 20, and it took me about 17 seconds to crash it: twisty-noob-panic-syndrome! I didn't do it again

If it was a Honda it might have been the 1,2,3,N and 1,2,3, N continous cycle tranny they had on some small bikes like I had in S Korea.

First scootered at 59, which I continue to be until later this year. Stacy thought I should get a scoot for my 60th, but a few months early so I get to use it before winter sets in (or before I'm too frail to push it off the stand!).

Drove a small motorcycle for two years when I was a teenager. Nothin' since.

Wonder why 56 seems a favorite starter age?

midlife crisis occur later these days. I started 4 seasons ago (when I was in late 30s) and could kick myself for not starting sooner. So anyone who is on the fence go out now and get a scooter, times- a - wasting.

Great bike!! Had an '81 R100CS (bikini fairing, 2.91 rear end, 40mm carbs). I loved that bike but it was deceptively fast. At 100 you felt like you were going 60. Traded down to an R80 after blasting through a speed trap at 5500rpm (around 110mph). I wasn't trying to speed, the damn thing was so smooth, quiet and stable I didn't notice.

PS--Lately I've been jonesing for a Guzzi V7 Classic. If and when they start showing up in the used market, I just may go for one (budget permitting).

Paul G.: My first Beemer was a new, R90S (Daytona Orange) and I've owned a bunch of airheads since. They are great bikes and if you like to wrench your own bikes, they're fun and easy to work on. I've also had my eye out for a used Guzzi V7 but haven't seen any at reasonable prices. I test drove a new one and it's just right for the type of riding that I've settled into at this point in my life. The R100 is actually an RT that had the fairing removed and was properly converted to an R100. My wife piloted an 81, R100RT with an EML sidecar kit that I assembled back in 1984. She drove that rig for 15 years until I found a K100/EML rig that had already been assembled. Sounds like we're birds of a feather.

I was sixteen years old. Lord, I thought she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Wait a second. You're talking about scooters, right?

I need about a half hour here....to clean the coffee I just spit out of my mouth off the monitor and keyboard.

The first time I rode a Vespa was in 1954, when I was about 18 months old. I still have home movies of me on it.




Piloting a motorized two wheeler was at about 8 when my go-kart was converted to a mini bike. We had a Cushman military surplus 3-wheeler I rode around the farm.



Then after getting licensed, I rode a series of motorcycles off and on for the next 40 years.

I hadn't ridden a Vespa since riding Dad's 50 years prior, then bought my LX 150 in 2005 at age 52. And Dad hadn't ridden a Vespa since his back then, so it is only fitting to start this post with me on Dad's scooter, and then 50 years later, Dad on mine.
