Besides the fact that the scooter looks much cooler and does not cut my lawn.

I noticed today that my lawn mower has a 190cc motor. My GTS is only 244 cc. I got to wondering what the difference is between the two motors. Is my lawn mower capable of cruising at 60+ miles per hour?

I guess there's only one way to find out. You might be able to improve the speed of your lawn mower by changing the cogs on the drive chain. You might also need a lighter roller on the back. I doubt you'll be able to do much for the braking, steering and suspension set up. If you have any success then we have lawn mower racing here in the UK which looks pretty good fun.

Your lawnmower makes about 5 or 6 hp at around 2,000 RPM. We used to put lawnmower engines in go-karts and we'd get up to 25-35 mph.

Your GTS makes around 20 hp at 8,500 RPM. We know you can cruise at 80.

Apparently there is a difference.

Lawn mower engines produce fewer horsepower than motorbike engines of the same displacement because lawnmower engines are less efficient and run at a lower rpm. This enables an inexpensive engine to last forever with cheap oil and no maintenance. You can get a lot more horsepower from a lawnmower engine, but don't expect it to last very long.

Cheers,
Bob

Well I don't think I'd be tempted to transplant the lawnmower engine into the GT but if you're talented enough the other way round might be a giggle

I have seen the racing lawnmowers with tweaked engines. They can run at a good speed. really the lawnmower is meant for torque and low rpm usage. but could be upgraded if carefully done. Nerd emoticon

Turn your lawnmower upside down, remove the blade housing, reverse the blades, and give it gas (while you hold on to it!)

Don't try this with your Vespa, it just won't work.

Years ago, my two sons took apart my chain saw (while I was on an overseas job) and put the engine ( a MAC-10) in their go-cart. Ran like stink!
But it sure screwed up my chainsaw.

With enough time and ingenuity, you can do a lot with an engine.

Even more exciting today, is what is being done with electric motors and adapting them to vehicles, 2 wheel and otherwise.
