and I seem to remember someone, somewhere, mentioning to reverse the springs that hold the rear carrier so that the spring tension is holding the rack in the down position instead of up. Has anyone done this, and is it that difficult to do? Thanks anyone for your input. Looked in the Wiki section and didn't see anything on this topic.

Completely unnecessary for a top-case install!

Agreed. Reversing the springs is fiddly but doable. You need to remove the circlips on either end of the springs and slide out the centre bar.

Most top box mounting kits, including the Givi and OEM ones will hold the carrier in the open position.
