Hi all,

I am hoping someone can tell me what the correct torque setting is for the nuts that hold the header pipe onto the two studs on the engine. I have looked in the workshop manual but the descriptions there are a bit confusing. I have a 400i.e. btw.

I am not sure if it is:

Exhaust / intake head fixing nuts: 10-12 Nm

I did search and although I found some great pictures and descriptions of fitting the Leo Vince exhaust, but didn't find the torque setting for these bolts.

I have fitted the new Leo Vince exhaust now but have only torqued to the 10-12 Nm settings and will give it a ride tomorrow to see how it goes.

That looks right, from what I see in the manual.
Here's a link to the manuals if you don't have them.

Thanks for the confirmation. I do have the online copy of the manuals, it was more a case of understanding the correct terminology used.

I had to look it over to make sure I was reading the right torque. Problem is you never know how well it was translated into English. Some of the words chosen in the translation would not be the wording I would use.

I think what you are looking for is:

Manifold - muffler diaphragm tightening clamp 16 ÷ 18

But to be honest a lower torque (if with anti-seize applied) is probably quite OK. Me, I don't use a torque wrench on any of these (gasps of horror) - I just do them 'á point' as the French might say.

No, he installed a Leo Vince Muffler and replaced the whole exhaust. So he needs the torque to exhaust to head.

That's exactly the torque I referred to. Manifold to muffler. Head to exhaust. The wording is not spot-on I agree - but the manifold can only be the last bit of 'solid engine' - and 'muffler' is the whole exhaust system. The clue is in the words 'diaphragm' and 'clamp' - there is a collapsible 'diaphragm gasket'[1] between the end of the downpipe and the manifold, and a 'clamp' that is then held on by the studs/nuts.

[1] Part number 18 on page 50 of the parts manual. Shows the separate 'clamp' as well.

Jim,

You are right, damn.

But what the hell is the "Exhaust / intake head fixing nuts:" then??
Guess I have to look at the parts manual.
If I care enough to look, I will post what I find.

Those are the screws that hold on the rocker-cover.

Thanks heaps guys, I was so confused after reading the different descriptions and none seemed right.

I will re-torque them after a few heat cycles.
