Hi there.

I have a 1999 (pre-leader) ET4. Driving home from work and it started making a really loud whirring noise when i revved it up. stopped and let it sit for a minute and it wouldnt start, starter turned but would not catch, or caught and died again. The kick start lever doesnt engage with anything, it just turn, there is a slight grinding noise.

Anyone know what might be wrong with it? I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions...

Almost for certain, the inner splines on the outer variator pulley have given up the ghost. Open the transmission case and check. May have been caused by a seizing (worn out) belt, but can happen at any time.

If it's just the outer variator pulley, not an expensive part. The actual replacing might be expensive-ish if you don't DIY. Say 30 mins labour *if that is all it is*.
