Hey there folks, I am looking at buying an 05 PX that is a theft recovery and as such it needs a new ignition switch. Does anyone know if the new PX had anything changed with the ignition, or can I just buy this http://www.scooterworks.com/Ignition_Switch_-_PX_P1080C602.cfm and a new key?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

First post and you're asking if the ignition can 'be fixed' on an admittedly stolen scooter? Fat chance, sorry, not on an open forum.

I'm buying the scooter from a scooter dealership. It has a Wisconsin salvage title based on the fact that it is a THEFT RECOVERY. Theft recovery bikes often have things wrong with them, this one had the ignition switch messed up and it has some crash damage.

I also posted this on my scooter clubs board (Knuckle Draggers out of Quad Cities Iowa/Ill) and on scooter bbs.

Thanks anyway.

Quite. If they want to sell it, they can sell it as a runner (as you might wish, but they aren't, guess why not) or for parts (which is what they evidently intend). If you buy it as parts - you'd better know *already* how to fix it. Not a cheap entry into scooter ownership - buy one that works , please.

And you won't be told here (at least not without considerable history, and then not in public) how to 'get around' any ignition systems.

Hah, wow. A presumptuous crowd aren't we? I have been working on scooters and mopeds for years now and I currently own a 1978 Bajaj Chetak. I do not, however, have ANY experience with modern Vespas, hence the question on whether the ignition switch on the 05 PX is the same as the 80's models. There is little to no information online about them either, so how am I supposed to know if anything was changed?

The dealership (Genuine, not Vespa) is selling it for an extremely low price because they have no interest in fixing it. It runs as is, it HAS a title, but I need to REPLACE the ignition switch...not "bypass" the ignition as you so kindly worded it. Owning new scooters maybe you have never had to replace an ignition switch before, but I assure you it's a fairly common thing to do in the vintage world.

I can understand your apprehension, but maybe you should have asked me about my situation first. I knew there was a reason I never posted here in the past. I will stick with scooterbbs and stellaspeed in the future.

Thanks for nothing.

Then very simple. Drill it out from the front, and replace. Full details in most online workshop manuals for most bikes. And those are but a mouse-click away, if you had bothered to look.

My god, did you read what I was asking? I wasn't asking HOW to do it, I was asking which part I needed! I even linked to the part I was asking about.

I know HOW to replace it.

Then may I suggest you are asking in the wrong section? I'll move it appropriately in a second or so.
