Am I the only one that finds that something made by Honda that "will be released in Europe and North America first and sales in Japan at a later date" a bit odd?

Sounds like good news. Guess we wait to see the results. It would be nice to have some options for a change!

Sounds like, functionally, it is essentially a clone of the Aprilia Mana electronically controlled CVT transmission, minus the "rain" engine and transmission map. By the way, if you've not ridden the Mana, you are missing a remarkable and memorable experience.

I think that's the transmission Honda uses in the DN-01.

It is a really sophisticated piece of machinery.
I'll bet it costs a bunch when it fails!

It will be great when they start to use them in bikes.

I don't know how quickly they will filter down to Scooters though, they are complex, heavy and expensive. But they have the effieciency of a manual gearbox with the ease of being able to be used as an automatic. They are used in top end cars with "flappy paddles", Ferrari's for example but the flappy paddles we see on normal consumer cars are still using standard auto boxes.

Perhaps as we start getting larger displacement and higher horsepower scooters then it may be necessary as the double clutch doesn't have issues with high output motors whereas belt drives used with variators start to struggle.

"functionally" is the key word, as in from the user's experience. EN82pg: it's not the DN01 tranny. that's a CVT a la the Mana. what this new gearbox is a dual-clutch manual. totally different beast mechanically and has the potential to be more efficient and handle greater torque.

This is something VW, Audi, Porsche etc has been using for years. Porshe and Audi started using it for racing in the late 80:s. I think it was originally "copied" from some tractor were there is a need for a constant pull without loosing momentum during gear change, eg when plowing

I think the key here is it is for large engines. Not a lot of need for high hp motorcycles in Japan. When I was there the top speed limit on the freeway was 60 kph. The 4 speed transmission in my '69 right hand drive Toyota Corolla couldn't get in 4th gear without violating the speed limit.

uh, the freeways in japan are NOT 60 km/h limited. wow. and, for the record, Honda makes large, fast bikes and cars. for instance the first motorcycle to get the new twin-clutch gearbox will be the VFR1200, a 1200 cc sport tourer. it looks to be absolutely awesome, and will have somewhere near 200 hp if rumors are true.

yeah, that's just about 10x the horsepower of my MP3. ponder that.

I spent 39 months there from 74 to 78 although I was at sea most of the time. I never saw a speed limit above 60 kph. I lived in Yokosuka about 50 miles south of Tokyo. Speed limits were loosley enforced. I rarely traveled any long distance by car as the trains were so much more convenient and quick.

Of couse my memory from 31 years ago may be faulty. If you have better or more update information, what are the legal speeds now? Can someone with a high horsepower bike open it up on Japanese roads today?

So does that mean the "Next meetup in the South East" can be changed to "Next meetup in Tokyo" now? 8) All we need to know how to understand is "What the heck is that?" in Japanese.
