My scoot has a lovely "Been hanging out in a shed under some crap for the last 30 years" look about it and I want to clean off all the crud but I specifically don't want to alter the look otherwise.

So, what do you put on it to preserve it from degrading further, but still allowing it to look clean and nice?

I'm nervous to clean it properly until I have some plan of what I'll do next. The paint has flaked off in a number of places but because it's all so oily there is very little rust.

I read a good tip on a bicycle restoration site of using a liquid wax and toothbrush to clean and degrease. then polish with polishing/rubbing compound. then wax with a good paste wax. Even where there is rust the liquid wax will soak in and stop it going further.

Worked nicely on my lambretta. Be careful with the rubbing compound as you can go right through the paint if it's thin.

OK so there is a lot of good information on cleaning the bodywork. Any special tips for the chassis & engine stuff. At the moment I'd like to clean it up as best I can without pulling it all apart much more. So clearly this will limit how thorough I can be.
