Yes, for 300 I would even overlook the floormats.
And it seems to be 'color of the month' too.
Somebody got lucky...

Maybe I should go for the 20$ one Ginchy found. What's the cost of shipping a scooter between USA & Australia? At least we have an honest seller.

Only thing interesting on Seattle CL today for small money is this http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/mcy/5642302813.html and mostly for the car in the background and for the ad copy. Apparently no title necessary in Seattle for little ones:

Has a basket on the rear, all the original parts and cool old California plate. No title, i have rode it for over 2 years all over seattle with no problems, i have asked cops if i need tabs and they have told me multiple time if they see mopeds all they worry about is wether you have a helmet in or not. So please do not hassel me about it or I will ignor you.

Sweaty looking Sears.
I'm new here and have already had one shot down so what do the experts think of this Sears.

Not sure it's a great deal but I like it.

Real deal, but Allstates have the pogo stick front. A little bumpy ride. The price is on the high side, but given DC, and if you negotiate, it could be acceptable.

Check out Facebook groups and scoot.net for better deals.

It depends on some things... like does it run? And what do the "new" parts look like.

If you can get him down to $800, and it runs or looks close to running, then it's not a bad deal.

The super is bodgy. The P200 looks like a clean bike. At $1800 it would be right, but not DOD.

Nice looking, price is a bit high, but that is a 125cc, three speed of slow - definitely not built for DC traffic

I was looking at the Allstate but I think it might be a little to much nvolved for me. So this is the next contender. I would ideally like something older but they either need a lot of work or cost considerably more. So what does the group think. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/mcy/5649513898.html

Unless you have the knowledge and tools to get it running, I would pass.
For a few $100 more I'm sure you could find one that is running.

Venting
I was looking at the 81 p125 (see above)that is being sold fairly close to me. He said it had some extra parts and ran when it was parked. So of course I email hi and ask how log has it been parked and are the other parts new or used or what. Seemed like reasonab questions to me. Turns out it has been park d for 15 years and needs a butt load work. And he ends his email with

"I am open to best offers but I will not entertain lowball offers. I have half a dozen inquiries about it yesterday and will let her go to the best offer. So please don't waste my time. "

Waste his time. Well he can keep the damn thing and I will keep looking.

Sorry he just honked me off implying I was wasting his time.

LMAO I got the exact same email reply. What is a reasonable price for a bike which needs that much work?

As far as prices go on Vespa, it's like houses - location, location, ... well, you get it. For me that P125 is priced high for a project. And if you want something more "vintage", you will have to 1) learn to work on it or 2) get ready to open your wallet. Best advice I can give is to connect with your local scooter club. Most likely a member will have a scoot for sale that is in better shape (running), and can help you stay away from the mountain of bodges on Ebay and the like. Meanwhile, keep posting your possibilities so we can advise. Good luck with the search.

a grand is the max i'll spend on a 125 or 150 p of any make, Stella or Vespa, running. I'd consider it a good deal to get a p200 at a grand if it requires little work (a carb rebuild for example).

for a project 125/150 of any kind, that price gets cut in half.

Dozuki, I shot you a PM with a tip on a properly priced P project near you.

Here is the latest one that peaked my interest. It's not the prettiest thing in the world but I kind of like that and it seems to be priced ok. The seller said there is a little wiggle room and it's not to far away.

If it was P200 with a P200 engine, then yeah, I would say grab it,. But with a vbb engine? No. Better to find a nice Complete, running P200 and ante up the extra cash.

The owner says it has a 66vbb engine has a little rust is kick start only and starts right up. Is missing some of the trim and the badge. And has a clear title. Not sure about the mileage since it has a replacement engine.

I'm not knocking the VBB engine - it's fine - in a VBB frame. But it would limit you in ways that a proper P200 would not. 6hp versus 12 hp. Now if it was a p200 engine in a vbb frame, then I would say go for it. That scoot has been up for sale for a while. It is a Project, and not really a complete one. If you want a project, get one that has all the original parts going for it. Otherwise, you will spend a lot of time chasing down this and that and will wind up in the back of your garage in a pile.

I was going to say the same thing... a P200 engine in an older scoot is a good thing, an old engine in a P200 is not.

Look for a complete scooter, a runner but maybe not a looker. They're out there.... just takes a while at this time of year.....

Allow me to translate ad:

"Truck bed liner on floor" = rust was so massive we couldn't hide it with normal paint

"Needs to have new carburetor installed (last carb was shot)" = we tried to get it running by fiddling with carb and lost a bunch of pieces

Dozuki,
Can you start a new thread, called "What's wrong with this one" or "I want to look at it, what do you think?" I think if it goes into another thread we can pop opinions out there and help guide you.

I'll start here, even though it might not be the right place....

1) Figure out how much of a project you want. Most of what pops up as a Deal of the Day are projects best left for experienced wrenches, not a simple fix and ride.

2) What size scoot are you looking for? There's everything out there from a 50 Special to a P200, and have different capabilities. Of course, the capacity of the engine isn't always a limiting factor.

3) What style scooter are you looking for? Depending on how you want to ride, You can get anything from a old widebody to smallframes to large frames, to the P series, and don't forget the Allstates.

4) What era are you looking for? Anything pre-1960 is hard to find, and hard to find parts, but if that's what gets you going, then search away. If the classic 60's scoots is your thing, then there's plenty out there, but beware bodges. If 1970's are your thing, then there's the Rally and Primavera. And after that there is the ultra reliable, but sometimes not too pretty P series.

OK, here's the last thing.... there are way too many people who parked a scooter (or car or motorcycle) 15 or 30 years ago, and tell you it needs a carb rebuild and it's ready to go. I call bullshit on that...because if it was that simple, then as a seller you'd do it and sell the scoot for more. Most likely due the the inactivity, it will need a little more or a lot more than just a carb clean and fresh gas.

So start another thread, and we can concentrate on YOU and what YOU want.... we really don't mind.

^^^^ This. And will also add: What are going to be using the scooter for? Ride to rallies, weekends only, daily rider, in-town putting around, posing at Starbucks, cussing and wrenching, restoration, etc.... Figure that out and you will be able to narrow down what would be best for you. Honestly, if this is going to be your first Vespa, you really would be better off with the P series. Yes, not as pretty as the older models, but very reliable. Not that the other can't be, just a little more thought and wrenching is required.
