I am also curious why getting so excited about Stellas on here - granted, I've only really had experience with one but it felt a bit like knowingly getting a px with more maintenance. I got to know my friend's bike well because he always needed my help on it... Don't get me wrong, it looked nice and rode like a 2T shifty, and I'd certainly ride one for the right price, just a little surprised they've become sought after

*edit* not being snobby BTW - plenty of stellas that look better and run better than my tired heaps

This doesn't make sense. If there are so many of them for sale as a poster mentioned earlier, how can they be sought after? Bikes that are sought after are usually rare. Used bikes appearing in large numbers are most likely being dumped.

Whatever you're calling "dumped in large numbers," from a statistical perspective just isn't.

Also, a lot of Stella's were bought by first time riders, as the OG Vespa riders refused to ride them. So they had a naturally higher attrition rate as a result. Scooterworks used to always have one or two used Stella's with <100 miles on the odometer and a scraped up left side, for example.

LML and Genuine did more go keep vintage (i.e. metal body shifty) scooters going over the last 20 years than anything Piaggio even considered.

In the US, Piaggio pulled the plug on 2 stroke scooters thanks to the Marxist-Leninist state of California, so P's were the last bikes we got here in large numbers.

Why would I want a Stella? Because functionally it's a PX and has stock features that P's don't have. With a bike that allows you to swap engines back and forth between a 1962 and a 2008, the shortcomings of the LML quality control seem easy to overcome. Dodgy wiring? Crappy rubber? Exactly the same things we would be dealing with getting even the newest P series bike in the road. I would probably have a different perspective if I was a collector, rather than someone just wanting to put together a reliable bike.

Yeah, I'm still looking for another project scoot but had been limiting myself to a P200 (or maybe a smaller P) but I'm wondering if I should also consider a Stella.

We are talking differences between a golden delicious and a red delicious apple here. Same shit. Same level of break down.

But I'll agree that Stella prices for sale lately are from people who are clearly smoking crack or think that everyone is a stupid sucker. They are begging for a little humility. Then again, so are the vespa sellers listing small frames for 4k and run of the mill large frames for 6-8k.

So I'll applaud the occasional realistic Stella seller.

I'd jump on that silver PX in a heartbeat, but i'm tapped out from buying too many dirtbikes already this summer. Too bad, since I really need to bring up my scooter to dirtbike ratio.

Some people are starting to figure out that they are not going to get 3k plus for their projects and 5 for their runners. Everything on FB marketplace is at least 1k high, if not more. The only ones moving are the ones priced right. The rest just linger on there for months.....

The prices got super high. Like I never see a p200 locally for less than $3500. Maybe those ones sell faster so you don't see them. But the expensive ones sit there forever.

If you look up "what is a p200e worth," this one pops up. And then like the ones at Bello Moto they're trying to get $6k for.

I think it maybe changes expectations.

There's three coats of paint, you'll need to take two off to see red and what metal actually looks like.

I am new to Vespas but I saw this on the side of the road over the weekend. $3000 firm the sign says.
The paint is severally cracking and there is a lot of rust.

If paint is cracking it's most likely full of body filler. What's it look like under that mat? Might belong in our spot a bodge thread.

That's a typical SEA example. Basically, a POS, put together welding various rotten frames covered in buckets and buckets of bondo just to make it look good and then sell to unsuspected victims. Please, don't tell us you bought it...
