True. I believe he did all the assembly work after the body and engine were done. Real nice guy. His interests seemed to have shifted and he's now more into MGs.

the deal maker/breaker will be the title status for a CA resident. $700 in back fees - forget it. title and on non-op? good to go. nice body on that.

Looks nice but it's not a '64 with it having a round tail still. That puts it at early 1962 or earlier.

Even better that it's a 62, but it's too much for my blood. Especially when he says "the parts alone are worth that much"...

It's just not stated in the ad. We don't know. Usually bikes in this condition don't have a current title with paid up fees. California is stupid in that if you rack up hundreds in fees for not paying, those fees transfer to the new bike owner when you try to transfer the title. If you pay a small fee ($20 or so) to keep the registration current but in non-operational status (i.e. don't drive it), you can avoid this situation.

Some bikes are up to date, some have back fees, and some have "disappeared" from the system, allowing them to be registered again without fees. Until you get a VIN and run it through the fee calculator, you don't know what you have. But you'll also need to know the last plate number as well...

Bought this GTS 250 off eBay classifieds a couple of weeks ago for £850 sold as seen. Found some welding needs doing on engine case where the side plate sits for exhaust and shock due to bodgery. Been quoted £60 for that. Still think it's a good deal for what I see them advertised for in the UK.
Needed a starter clutch to but I knew that so engine removal was anticipated plus a Mallossi transmission kit with Variator clutch and belt came with it.
Can't quite work out how that pic of me appeared on my phone of me working on it.

Looks like a great project you have there Graham. I'm envious of the workshop facilities you have at your disposal, especially the motorcycle table. Is it a automotive garage, and is that the original 250 colour?, I don't remember seeing any 250's in that shade before.

It's not the original colour and it's at the car garage across the road who let me use the ramps when not in use. They have given me a key to come and go as I please and a space in the corner so I have just installed a motorcycle lift but not working yet as need a ram for it. Engine now out but found another bodge to do.

Typical cheap factory connectors. Plastic gets old, cracks and then you are sitting on the side of the road

Not a great deal at the asking price, but it's been up for a bit and O may take less getting it into "deal" territory.

that's not bad at all, I think it might be on par for today's pricing, which has shifted upward. solid bike.

$2500 for a VNB in pieces, with no title.

Interesting. That's like the baseline price for any Vespa in CA now, apparently.

It looks nice, and has lovely patina on the original paint. But it's like another $2k easy to just get it put back together and registered.

The VNB in pieces is showing $2k on the ad, and he won't probably get it, to be fair.

If it were a DOD at $2k, it wouldn't still be up.

I see these on CL that are deals, and gone in a couple of hours.

I guess that's why people might think the prices are higher. The listings that stay up for two weeks are like this one.

I saw that the other day. I would bring 800 or 900... the non running is something that requires sorting out. But still at 1200 not bad.

I'd jump on that like a bird on a June bug.

hell, that rear rack/backrest set up is worth about 1/2 the asking price to start.

but I wouldn't touch a thing. probably do seals and gaskets, cables, tires, all the general and just leave it as is and roll it.

that is kind of where the market is headed. I mean, there's still stuff out there but unless you're absolutely rabidly searching relentlessly and willing to travel or ship or gamble on a bike this is about rate to be honest.

you see P's listed for 4K plus, are they getting that? who knows?
same with allstates at $3500 and other poorly "restored" bikes-- not even bodges, straight up American market ragged out 100 sports are trading hands at 2K all day. but then a rally pops up at 4K and it's gone in hours.

the market is weird. especially more so now. it's like everybody found out that it's okay to stay home and find new hobbies and suddenly have disposable income from not going out so they're snapping up all kinds of recreational stuff- pedal bikes, motorcycles, dirt bikes, scooters.

so 2K for a pile of parts? if I was close, could run the numbers and it was clean, and I didn't have 5 million other projects? I might gamble on something like that. if it was a round tail, even more so.

Yeah, I was trying to set up a local on this one. New to scooters, but likes the old stuff. 150 miles one way, I would jump on it myself if I was still riding.

like John says, the real prize is the motor and hydro fork.

there's an easy 1K-ish in parts there if you blew it apart and were patient selling them off.

but I'd go 500 all day on that.

Yes and no, and I'm not going to budge on this one! "Same, same different" is the best description. The Stella has a very similar design to the Vespa EFL transmission, but it ain't no EFL. The Vespa EFL transmission (and complete gearbox for that matter) is far superior to the LML adopted stepchild. I'd rather have an early P transmission than a LML transmission. The best of both worlds would be a complete Vespa EFL transmission in a Stella case (which I have done before).
