I don't do fb or I'd offer less. I've seen this happen with other things on CL, something gets listed and the seller just collects offers, then relists it higher and higher.

huh. weird. I get zip off of FF or safari on Mac. figured it was ghost in the machine or because I don't have the mybookfacespace. OR it was the scooter gods telling me I don't need to be chasing projects!

Are Allstate's more desirable/valuable than VBB's?

They have nostalgic appeal here in the States because they were imported and sold by Sears and were cheap and fun. They were the first "motorcycles" a lot of people had as kids.

No, not really. The VBB front fork alone makes a difference over riding the shockless, pogo stick of the Allstate.

You could get anything and everything boring and cool from Sears back in the day. Every year we reduced the Christmas catalogue to tatters when we were kids. I totally get the nostalgia.

To me the appeal of that Allstate is the fact it's a handlebar bike. Yes that fork will need some mods if one weren't after a concourse resto… but that thing screams Sunday Best aesthetics.

Pre '69 '59 were "wide body" rather than large frame.
Everyone has their own preferences.
What attracts my eye:

- they are round tail, like early Alfa Romeo spiders.
- there is no hump in the tail for the tank, so it's curved all the way up to the seat. This is one of the nicest lines Vespa ever produced in my eye.
- the cowls are very round and and almost torpedo like - like Sofia Loren's … pure sexy
- and of course the handlebars. As vintage a look as you can get - have always wanted to build one.

Gick is a specialist in the motors.
I'm more of a fan of the 150's that came after on the 60's scoots.
But there are kits and parts for these earlier motors.

No, pre fiftyEIGHT! I have a pre '59 AllState and it is a 1958 largeframe, not a widebody.


It's the same as this 1958 I posted here earlier and obviously not a widebody.

Of note… I saw Sticky is dipping his toe into a wideframe game making a how-to manual. His Lambretta books are considered top notch so I would suspect his wide frame manual will be of the same quality. Keep an eye out.

Pretty sure whodat has a '58 with headset rather than handlebars?
I'm aware of one for sale right now as well - and it's purportedly "58 and has headset.
Think '58 was a cross over year.

Wide frame book?
I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Oh - and one other reason I like the allstates:

Sears convinced Vespa to cheapen every thing they could on this generation of wireframe.
- the front shock is, well, actually just a spring.
- the floor rails are just pressed with no rubber.
Etc.

So when I fix it up - I will feel good about my "upgrades" to finishes more closely matching what was done in Europe.
(Warning shots fired).

My fave...

For the large frame Allstate models like yours, that replaced the wide frame ones, they at least upgraded the rails to rubber like their Vespa counterparts.
At some point it got 4 speeds.
I don't think they ever gave it a front shock.
Didn't you upgrade the front fork to VBB/Euro spec?

Clearly I am feeling guilty already about my less than stock concourse plans for my new beauty.
