Borderline DoTD here, but if you're looking for what seems to be a pretty much 100% OG 70's Super, it probably is at $2k.

Gotta go to Arkansas to get it, but maybe the seller will give you a deal on the lift while you're there.

No, the one I'm thinking of was sort've a dark red or maybe orange. Pictures of it were all in a dark shed or storage locker, so hard to tell for sure.

Even with a bent front wheel, I enjoyed the heck out of riding SoCal's yellow super for the second day of ROM last year. My problem right now is that I've been getting a lot of the "How many scooters do you really need?" questions from the boss lately, so I need to avoid drawing attention to my flock for a bit.

That is what I was thinking, the parts are worth the asking even if the body is unable to be repaired or just too expensive to repair. Then something comes up for $500 to put it into perspective.

This is my favorite thread on MV. The think tank that figures out the value of the older scooters.
So I was planning on buying these I figured parts alone right? Or more like thinking the blue would be fairly good condition. Anyway, figured it was worth the 45 minute ride anyway.

Then I heard back from the dude. What.a. dick. Patronizing. And full of shit!

I am trying to get him to answer some basic questions like " does the motor turn over?" Or "when was the last time you tried to start it and what happened?"

Pretty basic. But I guess my gender inspired him to give me this long line of bullshit. "Parts are real cheap" and "you could have it restored at a scooter shop for cheap" and then he confuses phrases like "get it running" to a full on restoration.

He did not even answer one damn question!! I was so annoyed. I know I shouldnt be, just go look at the bikes and decide for myself. Not the first nor will it be the last time I deal with a patronizing asshole.

But, I was kinda on the fence anyway, because deal or not, I already have 3 (2 Vespas) bikes and I should probably fix up 2 out of those 3 before I buy anything else. So that's my "almost bought it but for the dickhead seller" story.

Still, it's not the Vespas fault their title holder is a dick. I would be curious to know their fate when someone does snatch em up.

If it was close enough, I would look at it. But, yeah, when the seller can't give you a straight answer, it's a turn off, especially if it is a long drive to check it out. So screw 'em, other deals will come along and you already have the 2 to work on anyway.

You sold the Stella, so you just have the 4 left, right? I tell my lovely wife that this hobby, though time consuming at times, has kept me home with the children when they were growing up - so I was able to drop what I was doing to take care of things. I wasn't hanging out at the bars like many of my co-workers and I did not spend all day golfing like her dad did. I was there. Heck, I have probably spent more time wrenching than riding in the last 20 years. But I learned making her favorite meals, listening to her woes and foot rubs go a long way to keeping the peace.

To me, a Super is sorta halfway between a small frame and a large frame Sprint. They have their place. There is one by me that has been up for sale for over six months, but he is asking way too much.

Ugh! Yeah there are jerks. And worse when he thinks a woman will be an easy mark. If it was only 15 minutes away you could just go see for yourself. But I don't think you'd like what you'd see on the blue one's frame, some serious cancer there from the clues.

BINGO! You nailed it. I have two, but the first one, a Super125, came with a lovely newish LML 150 motor on a 10" wheel which meant that the easiest way forward was to convert the front to 10" too like Ginch did. He has given great reviews on his conversion and advised me on how to do mine.

But I always wanted a newer 8" w/ a stouter frame than my old AllState and a Super is about your only choice other than a few oddballs. So I snagged a Dan Motors Super150 w/ original motor and on fakey 10" rims w/ 8" hubs. Motor was in pieces, and a few challenges along the way but it was easy to put it back on 8" rubber. And yeah, 8" Super sporty fun to ride like an oversized smallie!

This is a screaming deal…

I'm biased but late Supers are a hoot, 3-port Veloce engine, very tunable, close ratio gearbox. Lots of joy. Somebody nab it.

I totally agree! Just a buff job and it's on! I don't see any deals like that in the SoCal area especially smallframes. Most seem word of mouth. Plenty of high priced stuff though.

Yeah, I looked at it today. Has been outside like a garden gnome. Bird poop on the seat. Guy spent $900 last year for the pink slip, maybe unpaid for years? It's got lots of surface rust and lifted paint with rust cracks. Previous cheap repaint. I could not get the kick start to move, even pulling the clutch, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to have confirmed it was in neutral, clutch should have released. Would be my first Vespa. He's asking $2,000. Thoughts? I'll add some photos. He's waiting for my offer tomorrow.

I agree w/ John. Lowered price and I bet there were some lookers who didn't like what they saw on that floor & tunnel. I'm guessing maybe the left side was parked towards the ocean and exposure to wet salty air, the other side tucked into a building w/ overhang, more protected but who knows. Check the front wheel rusted left side but not the right.

Still 1600 for a 2900 mile P200 motor, fork, headset, clean cowls & mudguard(w/ reflectors), decent seat, BBQ rack w/ desirable back rest and even a lovely tractor tail light. Add all that up and tell me what you come up with.
Just saw this. In process of looking for my first Vespa, totally fine with a full restoration. I emailed then texted him early on. Guy agreed to sell it to me for $1,100. But couldn't find the pink slip, would 'bring it to me' after I paid, wasn't available at our meet time because went crabbing instead. I'm not sure he was a jerk, as some suggested, but definitely shady. I've got no interest. Most people on MV seem cool. I want to find a quality transaction.

It has a title which is good, but the condition leaves a little to be desired at that price point. regardless, if the kick is locked up that's a pass unless it's little birdie prices. (cheep cheep)

but yes, the kick should roll over with the clutch in.

if that was tagged up and a good runner with fresh rubber? yeah, 2k wouldn't be bad. but it's a little tatty and might need a motor rebuild? 15-ish would be the call.

for a first bike, try and shoot for the most complete, clean and running example you can find. if you spend a little more for something better you'll be miles ahead. like dropping 2300 on a decent piece over 1500 on that one, that 800 difference will put you in a much better position.

Here's a great twofer that somebody might wanna to jump on at a price like this. No papers but not too hard to get if buyer is local- last time I did this it was you just need a notarized BOS and schedule a State Patrol VIN check to verify not stolen, then you can get reg & plate but wait 3 years to get legal title. Anyway, very cool pair of AllStates!

Feels off.

I'd expect someone who is selling a collection would have some idea what it was worth and not list it with a lowball ask.

Collection selloffs get listed with stupidly overpriced asks if they're wrongly priced.

That makes it more odd to me being they know what it's worth.
They have scoots posted on CL all the time with tall prices.

Ok. Big update.
Guy turned out to be legit.
Followed up with me.
Said was lots of interest.
First guy who came, next day after listed, gave him $2,500 on the spot.
Actually wished me luck finding a Vespa.
So, how does this work? Is it normal that these sell within 24 hours?
I've missed three opportunities because of these quick turnovers.

A bike that nice, at that that price point? You have to be quick, zero tire kicking and offer the ask.

I totally get your hesitancy about the meet and cash... but If I was local I would have have just said. "Will pay cash, meet me at warehouse I will go to ATM if it's all square."

Make it easy to make the sell w/o making yourself at risk.

It's a highly sought after model at a very good price. I found my scooters on this forum. It was easy to see that the bikes were legit as there numerous threads going back years about them. Also good contact with the owner by phone. P series bikes go slower.

Ok.
That's unfortunately the outcome I was expecting after reading your last post. Sorry you missed out.

Yes, this is how it works. If you find a good deal on a bike you want, you move on it IMMEDIATELY.

I once called on a $1000 p200 10 min after it was listed. 30min later got a call back. She'd had 12 voicemails, but mine was the first. Wouldn't hold it for me for a day. An hour and a half later, I was riding it home.

Ya gotta move quick.

hard pass.

you don't want a GL as your first bike, either.

as to what's a fair price? nothing is set in stone. it's all about condition, provenance, history, tags and title.

you could find a p that's tatty but with a rebuilt motor and current tags and title for 2K-ish or somebody selling one that's pretty, off system and been sitting for years for the same price or a little more-- but that's gonna cost you another 2K to get back on the road.

don't buy just on the premise of FOMO, make a good decision.

start a thread, and ask questions you'll get PLENTY of advice and probably offers too. shit, we ALL have projects we'd unload.

P200 is a good choice. It's good that you aren't after something rare and specific. Here's why.

P200's were punched out like widgets. One of the most functional and reliable Vespas.

Stock 200 gives decent power from the factory. Parts are readily available and fairly cheap. Rebuilding the engine by the book will get you started with good power without the fuss of tuning. (You can do that later). It's also less complicated compared to the real oldies.

They come up for sale fairly often, so you can hold out for something that's in decent condition and complete. When that bike comes up and the bell goes ding, put your wad of cash on the barrel and take it away. You can look as long as you like. The thing is to have all your shit together; cash, buddy with a pickup, beer for buddy to get the deal done.

The Rally 200 is one of those holy grail bikes. You would have to jump at it, even if it was a POS that you had to weld back together around an original brake pedal. Best to leave that stuff for the big ballers. When you jump at stuff, you can get burned. P200 is way lower risk and less of a wheeler dealer kind of buy.
