Just talked with him.
Guy was so frustrated because people wanted to give him $800/$900.
He had about 15 people reach out.
I delayed my call because transport I used wanted $500.
Literally, 5 minutes before I talked with the seller, someone called and is driving from Reno.
Seller restores and flips vintage bikes, he got this in a package deal.
If the Reno guy flakes he will sell me the registered p200 for $1,000 and charge $300 to deliver to my door.

I get the sentiment here, but I'm still trying to sort out this thing. I'm thinking not an SEA bike, but somebody's ameribodge. Still on 8's, missing all the flashy chrome, but still there are weird vibes I can't quite make out.

At any rate, I'd not go $1k on that. That's like a "I'm feeling lucky, I got $500" kind of bike.

A'righty…. I think I'm buying it. He removed the listing. By Quick Look, because the link and engine photo are gone, does it seem ok? Bodge?

Unfortunately, he got flooded with calls immediately after posting. He thought I sounded informed about these and said I can buy it, gave me his address, and removed the listing. He sounded frustrated, similar feedback from the guy with the red p200 for $1,000 earlier this week.

I'm going to see it at 10 am. I can easily walk away.

Please provide any feedback on what I should look for. He has a pink slip/title. I will check both the frame and the motor vin. The motor may be swapped? I remember seeing a large green wire to the spark plug???? Not much bling on the Vespa seems good. White wall tires may be a flag? I'll bring a strong flashlight to look into the gas tank.

If you zoom in on the tiny engine photo you can see the large green wire to the spark plug.

For $1,100 even if it's questionable, it may be fun for me to ride around town.

I'd go check it out with the cash in my pocket. Things I'd do.

Ask history and let him talk (I'm bad about the let em talk part)

Check for any wrirdness - who knows what that may be.
It's a repaint, so ask if he knows who painted it
Interesting trim on the front fender.
Trap headset ( like a GL). I personally like them.

What else - does it roll? Shift? Start? Look in the tank?

For a thousand bucks, can't be too picky and you can do all the checking out in your driveway when you get it home

I went and saw it…. Here were my findings.

Immediately I noticed a bondo patch, with rust coming through. The paint was an odd shiny thick finish, many areas of peeling and other areas where there was thick cracking with rust.

The carb was a spaco 24/24. I was expecting a Dellorto?

One of the biggest problems was that there was no engine number??? I believe I was looking at the correct place. There is a blank area without number.

I asked history. He knew nothing. Bought it a year ago with intent to fix. Had a box of parts.

The wiring hanging from the switch had solder on the ends, which makes me wonder if someone tried to install then stop?

In pieces, but $750 for what appears to be a complete P200 in Claremont, CA. Since it's already been registered in CA, one would assume it's titled.

Pretend it's 1980 something and have a coffee at Harvard Square (long gone) while you're there.

What's this worth?

probably not much, because I'll bet it's got a more back fees than you're going to pay for it, to the point you could just find a bike with current papers and spend that money on additional quality.

Not that this is a DOD.
But I think it's so totally rad that it deserves a mention!

Big time. You can even see where the legshield glovebox was attached for that truly bodgetastic effect.

It's definitely a practiced skill. There's some great dissections of bodge elements in Bodgespotting. it should be required reading for anyone buying a vintage bike blind.

I'd go "Reverse Unicorn". That is the antithesis of everything awesome about Ned's rig.

That color combo always reminds me of a 1980 VW diesel pickup.

They did that combo on the '81 diesel Vanagon too. The color was Assuan Brown. I had an '82 diesel Vanagon, which was the darker shade.

At $2,500, that thing is pretty freakin' far from DOTD. So much wrong with the "restoration," I have to assume the mechanicals are similarly jacked up, so it's basically a Project.

It's a deal at $1,200, maybe, but mostly because the paperwork is sorted.

That paint scheme immediately made me feel likr it had been built in the Cholon District. Just my first impression.

Forget the scooter. In the background, i'm curious just what these skinny mud tires and old school 8 lug steel wheels are supporting. Could it be a heavy chevy?…
