lol.. I didn't know ALL CAPS was a tell tale sign of the aged! All those boxes give me anxiety. That room looks very dusty.. my nose itches now. I wonder how much twenty thousand one dollar bills weigh.

Most of the dealers I've known were more interested in Cadillacs and Mercedes, not so much the vintage Vespas

Ended up being a 1966 SX200 with 506 miles on the clock, and straight as an arrow. Yes it was I who was working in Southern PA and drove up last night to get it for $700. No I'm not flipping it, its getting all the love it deserves and is not passing hands again. Hell, I still have to get it back to Denver now.

Lots of rust but totally doable.

Just wanted you guys to know their still out there, keep searching as I've been looking for this over 20 years now. Keep on keeping on!

I'm starting to think there is a floor and ceiling for old Vespa prices. I've seen some real POS's go for $500 and some really nice bikes for 2500.

In the research and tentative inquiry mode for an older (60s/70s) scoot, a 150 or larger. These popped up on C-list a few weeks ago, in my neck of the woods. Finally got around to calling on them.

The owner says he's had them for about 5 years; got them for himself and his girlfriend, from a guy who fully restored them in LA (Couldn't recall the name, found it in an ad in the paper). Rides them 200 miles/year for fun, no problems at all, he's done the basic maintenance but says they've been trouble-free.
Says that engine was re-built and many new parts (didn't name them).

Would like to go see them this weekend. (particularly the Sprint)

It is a work in progress, so it's a lot cheaper than the pretty one above. It looks like most of the hard work is already done though. If work was done right , it's a good deal for a winter money pit. ... I mean project.

Both of those were "restored" in Asia, not LA. Keep looking.

How can you tell? I mean, I've read through all the "spot the bodge" pages...
And *if* they've been running well for a few years, does it matter? Or is this guy totally lying?

On asian restorations you see the same attributes over and over. The most obvious is that it basically looks brand new in the pictures. It's supposedly 40+ years old. Thing is it's an old abused frame with a 2mm coating of filler applied over rust, decay and bad welding. The filler is applied like cake icing over the entire body. looks good until it chips off and/or cracks which it will. Or until the rust makes it's way to the surface. There are a lot of specifics listed in previous posts and other places on the internet. All of the parts visible in the photos of those listings are wrong and/or very cheap reproductions. Vespas of that era do not have ignition keys. Vespa trim is not originally chrome... it should be alluminum or stainless steel. The floor mat should not be a solid piece of plastic, should be a rubber mat with metal trim. etc... nothing about those scooters is right.

Check out this thread for some great links and information. Good luck. Ask around before you buy.

I shopped around for a while and it seems that anything pre-1970 needs a lot of evaluation.

This'll not last long! Currently 1st ad on scootnet is a '79 P200 in Denver, $2K, 5300 mi, stored indoors so good paint & no rust, runs great, etc etc.



Oh yeah comes with a very nice SIDE CAR too.

This scooter only has 2700 miles on it, has the owners manual, tool kit, luggage rack and original spare tire ! It has been in storage the last 20 plus years. It is not currently running but the engine kicks over easily. The headlight & headlight housing are broken & the right front turn signal is missing. I do not have a title, I will provide a bill of sale and a copy of the papers where I bought it. I've been told you can get a title with that. With about $200 in parts you could have a fun toy. The scooter is in Morganton but I can deliver it to Charlotte or most anywhere in the area

the keyway on the crank is jacked. do they still make that crank? so for $3k i would not say its a deal at all.
