Like many others I had a considerable amount of freeplay (slop, if you will) in the throttle of my GTS. When I asked for help I was referred to 'www.modernvespa.com/forum/topic4715.html'. The author cited the same problem I was having and provided a remedy that included pictures. The problem is, of course, is that the information given was completely incorrect. A throttle's freeplay adjustment is not made at the throttle body connection, as shown in the photo, but rather near the twist grip on the handle bar. Both brake resavoir covers, and both mirrors have to be removed. Then the headlamp cowl (but only enough to obtain some working room). The adjuster and jam nut lie about two inches from where the throttle cable makes it's turn back towards the headlamp. From that point on it is simply a matter of turning the hex nut a thread at a time until the desired throttle play is acheived, then tightening the jam nut. Put everthing back the way it was and you're good to go. Also, this is an excellent time to set those mirrors just the way you want them.

Good Lord! How complicate can you get?
I adjusted mine by shifting the two nuts which hold the black tube on the right-hand side of the fuel injection system. Easy as cupcake! The throttle cable enters the back of this tube, and the inner wire comes iout of the front, threaded end. Two nuts lock the tube in a plate, and by loosening and adjusting them you can move the tube in and out. One spanner, two nuts, and the job is done. Ok, so you have to remove the pet carrier first. Mike your way sounds the easiest. |

Both ends are sometimes adjustable. On some bikes it's far easier to adjust at the thottle grip end - on others at the throttle itself. Some only have one end adjustable. Some have dual cables, both of which need tweaking. Depends on the model, that's all.

Mike Holland wrote: Very erudite, Jim, but I thought we were talking about Vespa GTS250 scooters. They seem to have a lot of minor modifications to the build spec during production runs. In looking at other "factory standard" scoots, I have noticed differences in materials, finishes (brushed vrs coated or stainless), bolt type (hex head vrs machine head) wiring harness connectors, wire wrapping styles even on same "year" vespa. My guess is that some of it is just what was available or sourced at the time for the lowest price and others look like a real engineering improvement. I am pretty sure this holds true for any complex manufactured item, that is why there is a world of difference between a mechanic and a parts changer. |

shameless plug for underutilized MV feature: this is exactly the sort of information that would be great to have in the wiki. here's an idea: why doesn't someone make this into a wiki article? or the beginnings of one, at least. please?
