Modern Vespa

I'm taking Italian 101, and to park at school, I have to use my car (don't ask! and I'm not complaining about it).

So, driving my car, I'm now experiencing what tons of other cagers must: driving behind a scooter.............stinks! And I'm not even talking about a two-stroker. I'm talking about a regular 4-stroker. They stink. Unless they are of the rare fuel-injected, catalytically convertered kind. Those don't stink. But they are the tiny minority.

So, if I had a choice, I would certainly want to get that stinker behind me (or at least be in the other lane, not behind him).

I haven't smelled the stink of a carb'd scooter for a while but boy do I get queazy smelling the exhaust of older cars, trucks, bikes etc (usually 'performance' machines) with their overly rich fuel/air mixture.

On the other hand though I can still recall how the sweet smell of two stroke oil would stay in my nostrils for hours after a long, hard day of snowmobile riding in the cold winter air - absolute heaven!!

Around here it's home-made biodiesel where you get to smell what it was made out of... soy beans, french fries, meat fat... nothing like rancid french fry smell coming out of an old mercedes for a few miles...

Catalyst = no stink
Once the catalyst is up to operating temp, after a minute or two, it will convert 95 % of the hydrocarbons (stink) and carbon monoxide (odorless) to CO2 and water vapor. It's not just an injection vs. carbureted thing. Many of the carbureted scooters have catalysts, such as the GT200 and LX150. I suspect, but am not certain, that the aftermarket sport mufflers have NO catalyst.

Eh-em. My scooter does NOT stink.

I love the scent of two-stroke in the morning, and the anguished cries of sensitive souls in my wake.

I do find it extremely ironic that "windbreaker" hates stinky scooters.
