So I was wondering what other people used for sunblock on the face. I picked up some Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunblock, SPF 85 (kinda expensive) at a pharmacy and I'm sorry to say it works like crap. I have tan lines where my helmet ends, etc. 85 SPF my SS!!!!

What do you all use and most importantly, does it work??

Shiseido
My wife loves this product, I've tried it on my face and it works good and it drys to a powder. BTW sun block won't stop a tan. it only blocks the harmful UVA &UVB rays and it also has to be reapplied every hour or so.

I read that anything over 45 SPF is a lie. TRUE SPF readings only go to 45 so if it says more than that it is only 45!

Finding stuff for your face that works is hard because it seems everything I try sweats down into my eyes and stings like hell.

I found this stuff to be the best. It's sold everywhere, is cheap and doesn't sting your eyes. I use this in Florida all the time.

Do not use stuff like that. It contains oxybenzone which has been linked to skin cancer. Basically the product that you are using to prevent cancer can give you cancer...

Use a sunblock that works via physical not chemical barriers eg something that has titianium dioxide in it. I use California Babies (really highly rated in a recent indie test of over 700 hundred sunblocks!). Target carries it, it works, but it is expensive. About $17/tube.
But, all good things cost...
IMO better to spend $17 and use a product that does not contain oxybenzone.

I wouldn't use that stuff. It's another product that uses a chemical block instead of a physical block - avobenzone - another benzone derivative.

What do you mean by "physical block"? Like I have to have to put so much on that it masks my face, hence it blocks the sun?

It refers to titanium dioxide dust that is inhaled.
Quote:
Therefore, the observations of cancer in animals were considered, by IARC, as relevant to people doing jobs with exposures to titanium dioxide dust. For example, titanium dioxide production workers may be exposed to high dust concentrations during packing, milling, site cleaning and maintenance, if there are insufficient dust control measures in place. However, it should be noted that the human studies conducted so far do not suggest an association between occupational exposure to titanium dioxide and an increased risk for cancer.
.
You may be right about the McCuff though. Razz emoticon

No, a physical block like titanium dioxide, or that zinc stuff that surfers use, reflects back the UV. Some sunblocks use this as their 'active' ingredient (like CA Babies)
Chemical blocks absorb and disperse the UV (like your Neutrogena).

Wangta mentions he has tan lines where the helmet ends, so not sure if that means his neck or face is getting sun?
Shoei (and some other brands) visors are meant to stop 100% UV.
For my neck I wear a Buff bandana type thingy.. (funny how it kinda sounds like a mccuff!)

Being bald and of Irish-descent I know sunscreen quite well. I use Coppetone Sport continuous-spray 30 factor. Goes on easy-you're dry in seconds, not yucky, and works very well.

Use a lot of suntan lotion. I find that the CVS brand works well. I use a 30 clear spray, and a 45 lotion on the face. You will still get tan either way as said above. It will just keep you from getting burned.

Depending upon the weather and your skin type, adults can safely use most products containing either zinc oxide or titatinium dioxide with an SPF rating of 15 to 50. Children and people with extra sensitive skin should use SPF 30 (minimum) and preferably SPF 50. Blue Lizard and Baby Blanket are amongst the best and safest to use. California Baby is also a very good product.

There are a lot of good products out there that are totally safe to use and you don't have to spend a fortune on them either. The best protection is lightweight clothing which is both UVA and UVB resistant. Solartex fabrics are amongst the best.

I used to use my second wife. She was what they nowadays call, calorically challenged. We would go to the beach and I would sit in her shadow.

I can attest that Coppertone Sport works well. They have SPF up to 50. Don't get it in your eyes. I tested for a week in the Black Rock Desert, elevation 4,000 feet.

Living in California, I usually I wear Luberderm Daily SPF 15 on my whole face. Luberderm Daily can be hard to find but it works well, and is pretty mild to wear. I also add the Super Sport added except for around the eyes when I am going to really be out in the sun for a long time.

"Does your sunscreen work? Surprisingly, 3 of 5 brand-name sunscreens either don't protect skin from sun damage or contain hazardous chemicals - or both. An Environmental Working Group investigation of 1,694 sunscreens rates the season's best - and worst.
Some companies have responded to EWG's 3-year campaign for safer, more effective sunscreens. 70% of sunscreen products now contain strong UVA filters, compared to 29% last year. The bad news: much UVA protection is still too thin to save your skin. Don't waste your money or risk your skin on sunscreens that don't deliver. Use our 2009 Sunscreen Guide to find better products."

regardless of what sunblock you're using, it's most effective when reapplied regularly - ideally once every hour or two, more frequently if you're sweating. most people don't reapply often enough.

That link is what educated me and got me to change what I was using.
I picked California Baby as it is easily available at Target stores (in the baby supply section). Most of the other highly rated ones are online only purchases, which can be inconvenient if you need it 'right now'.

There has been a spike in the incidence of skin cancers even though more people than ever are using sunblock. Current research indicates it may be BECAUSE of the sunblocks that use benzone based active ingredients.
