The guys over at the Toyota MR2 Owners' Club NZ wanted to do a short club run tomorrow (Sunday) to Diamond Harbour, Banks Peninsula (about 35 km or 22 miles away from Christchurch city) so I thought I'll get myself familiarised with the route... with a ride on my little Vespa, of course.
Route map showing Christchurch (A) to Diamond Harbour (C) around the volcanic crater, with a stopover at the transmission tower on top of Port Hills (B)
View from Top of Port Hills, Christchurch city against the mighty Southern Alps
No, those are not clouds!
Some sheep (hey it's a Kiwi road trip!). Overheard today at Port Hills, "you can never be more than 50m away from sheep!" (not true!)
A nice little rest point at Allandale, somewhere midway between Christchurch and Diamond Harbour
Someone's burning something and spoiling the scenery :-(
Further down the road at Teddington... damn, who's burning what?!
The lonesome scoot... actually, not. When I was taking this photo three Mod Vespas (mirrors and all) went zooming past and beeping in agreement and giving me the thumbs up.
A rare stretch of straight road!
Charteris Bay... Spring has clearly arrived. There are flowers everywhere but I decided not to stop and shoot them... otherwise I'll never finish the trip!
Another view from the same spot as above. Beautiful isn't it!
Finally, arrival at Diamond Harbour's wharf. I met the three Vespas again, they were coming back up while I was going down towards the wharf. Excessive nodding followed.
Taken along Dyers' Pass, on the way back to Christchurch. It's a beautiful road but the tight and steep terrain makes it difficult to stop and take photos.
I certainly want to take it slow and not lose my footing and fall off...
Back home. My MR2 is in Grigio Avio, too :-)

Re: Christchurch NZ to Diamond Harbour... on a 50cc Vespa
I flew in to Christchurch a few years ago and did the drive down to Queenstown over a few days. We went down the centre (not along the coast) on a day a lot like the one in your pictures. We were in a campervan, would have been amazing on a vespa.
You live in a stunning country, great pics. Will |

Lake Tekapo on a foggy day. Where did the Southern Alps go?!

It is great down that way. I came through there last January on my way back from Wanaka, it was a bout 32 degrees, Mt Cook was clear as, real nice. I love going via the canals to get off the main road.
