Well, this should be easy, but there are 3 of us women who have my GTS250ie pulled apart physically and we're having some issues.

re: Stebel Nautilus compact air horn

Horn instructions state we need 20amp fuse.

The wiring kit I purchased that is supposed help install this - has only a 15amp fuse.

??? Anything wrong Here?

More questions coming - it's been 2+ hours now and we need help!

15 amp is fine, assuming you are wiring off battery. Good instructions - https://modernvespa.com/forum/wiki-gt-stebel

Okay, thanks to OneEyedJack for the phonecall. We're working on it, and will likely post pix when done.

(we have NO business doing things like this - but what an experience!)

The day/eve is over. I heard the Stebel horn, just once; it hurt my ears it's so darn loud! Then as we were tightening everything in place and putting the bike back together, it doesn't work! 'Likely just something loose as it did work; maybe we're just not strong enough to squish the wires. 4.5 hours - I made the 2 gals leave who said this should be a snap and they'd do it for me - or with me. I have no smarts at things like this, so as of now - I have no horn. I'm having a big glass of wine and will hit the hay - 'Will drive it down to Vespa and have them try to fix it. It sure is a loud one-when it works!!! Thanks for everyone's help. Too bad no one in my own scooter club was interested in helping out. javascript:emoticon('')

Was that the Stebel Nautilus you installed or the Stebel Magnum?

The good news is that you heard the horn work at least once. That indicates that the circuit was complete. Before you take it all apart again, make sure that the fuse is in its holder tight, and hasn't failed on you. If those are fine, I guess you are going to have to open it up again and trace back the connections.

I have installed several Nautiluses in different bikes, and the one thing I found in common was that you have to pay careful attention to the way the wiring works in the leg shield area when you turn the bars from hard left to hard right. If a wire is led wrong or cut too short it might pull out of a connection at full turn. Also, you did use the relay didn't you?

Yes, the relay was used; you're likely right as we had to turn the wheel when putting back together. We DID have to move the horn about 1/4" 'up' as the leg shield wouldn't go back on until we did. That little move separated the wire at the battery - we thought that was it - but obviously after fixing that, it still didn't work. A little extra length on all the wires is a 'good thing' to have. Do you think I'll have to get a new wiring kit? Thanks for the advice and help.

You probably used a wire crimper to make up the ends. Go to Autozone or some such and get some equal or larger gauge wire and some "butt connectors".

ROFL emoticon

No really, that's what they are called. Just go in and cut any wire that is a little short and splice in some extra wire with two butt connectors. Do that anywhere it looks like it might be pulling or too short.

Be sure to leave the correct colors at each end of any "stretched" wire so you can trace them later if necessary.

It's working!!!! just as all suggestions, the butt connectors and making one wire longer did the trick. When I checked the fuse, gently, heck, the whole yellow wire on one end of the relay came out of the scooter! That was it, and the horn was positioned incorrectly which required more wire to the battery.

Now, I live in a retirement community (caregiving for my mother although I 'barely' qualify to live here), and I have to be quite careful that I don't blow this thing during "nap time". javascript:emoticon('Laughing emoticon')

Thanks for EVERYONE's help, really, REALLY!javascript:emoticon('')

It was not as bad as the 3 of us un-mechanically-educated women 'freaked out' over at the moments.

We could not have accomplished it without your call Jack. Thanks,

...and the next job will be easier. Go go go my friends, the first souffle doesn't rise, are you down hearted? No you have another go. The first mechanical job is hard, it gets easier. The guys have heartache and failure when they start out on the road to mechanical competence, they just don't let on.

Fay is right, it gets easier and easier as you do more and more. For me when I feel shakee about doing something on my scoot, (and doing the horn was certainly one time) I will read all I can find on this great site. There must be half a dozen threads here on that horn install.

Anyway enjoy,
Jack
