hello vintage folks,
Anyone here ever drop a modern Vespa running train, i,e, lx150 into a vintage body? Yes, I know that all of you think that it is taboo, but does it work? At some point, some items are not worth restoring to original, and if you have some new running gear, and old body hanging around, can it be done? And, most important, is it WORTH doing, or is it more work then it is worth.

THanks

I'd be quite surprised if Vespa don't ever do another manual transmission scooter. The 2-strokes were killed off by emissions laws but there's still a demand for geared scooters out there.

If you can't repair your old engine(for some reason), they do
make new 2 stroke engines for both Lambrettas and Vespas.
There are also many new Cylinder Kit's that you can use
to fix your engine, like Polini. malossi, Pinasco.
For the most part, you can easily find part's to fix your
Vintage engine. And I did not even mention used parts(old, or NOS, and new)
parts from places like Scooters Originali.

It would be harder to do, and take more mechanical skill than actually fixing and maintaining a vintage engine.

Would it be as much of a ball-ache to put a bigger engine in my modern? Please excuse my ignorance of such things, but I'd love a 200cc 2-stroke in my S50...my ideal scooter 8)

It's certainly feasable - the 180cc 2-stroke from a Gilera Runner would be the best one to use for the transplant.

It wouldn't be cheap to do this but would be a lot easier than converting a classic Vespa.

Thanks! Got something else to ponder on... 8) Done engine transplants before, put a 3.0 in an old Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 years ago - not unfeasable!

I'd be surprised if they did. A manual gearbox is much more complex than the CVT. It's a lot more expensive to manufacture. Also, there are more consumable parts like belts and rollers that Piaggio can keep selling.

Yea, the thought of my GTS300 engine in my 64 VBB makes me drool. I'll leave the clutch lever on there just so I can pretend I'm shifting.

Its called a S150 with a 190 cc BB kit. Many people actually have that setup. Not a 2 stroke but close enough.

I really enjoyed seeing something like this. Yes I know it's not for everybody, but you got to hand it to the guy for his craftsmanship.

I have a lot of respect for super stock looking bikes, cut downs, retro fitting modern technology into a classic scoot...whatever. Sometimes it does go a little overboard in he eyes of the beholder...but it is what it is. It think it just keeps things fresh instead of stale. I couldn't imagine everyone riding around the same fucking thing.

i agree with you guys about the '52. i love it too. a lot of people will have problems with somebody cutting into a beautiful vintage bike like that. that being said, those bikes, as beautiful as they are, are too slow for suburban/urban traffic. that guy has it all. he has the beautiful vintage lines and speed to spare. it would be cooler if it shifted, though.

We had a guy that worked at our shop for a few months that had a Runner 180 2-stroke motor in his Lambretta. That thing was fast and cool. We are helping a local guy right now putting a GT200 motor and Fork into a Fuji Rabbit. Excited to see how it turns out.

I'd like to see that happen, it certainly wouldn't take much effort for an enterprise like Piaggio to come up with. Sadly, I don't think the feel that there is a demand, otherwise it would already exist.
