Just curious about how many members have enrolled in Facebook and what have your experiences been. Do you think it is safe and secure?

I'm a member. Since I travel almost every week, I use it for brief updates on what both me and my friends are doing. It seems to work fine for that.
I don't "friend" my work assoicates or other such folks in a *weak* attempt to keep my life and work separate and never post anything that I think will upset others or possibly embarrass me later. Basically, I use if for a "wish you were here" postcard sort of thing and it seems to work fine for that. |

I mainly allowed myself to be sucked into Facebook because a handful of people I'd like to stay in touch with apparently don't know how to use email or anything else more useful online.

Good fun times. Use it regularly both to keep track of old friends, post pictures and videos, etc.
Secure is as secure does. Facebook doesn't really sell your info but you can get yourself in trouble just as you can anywhere online really. |

Great for staying in touch with old and new friends and sharing pics, etc. Very addictive!
You can set privacy settings as well, so only close friends/family see your personal info. Enjoy... |

It is NEITHER safe nor secure. It tends to allow too much access to what you think might be "private". So don't post anything you wouldn't want your boss to see.
A very important feature to pay attention to is this situation: Step one, you join facebook, cognizant of the above. You don't post anything naughty. Step two, you go to a party and get drunk. Step three, your friend takes a picture of you, and posts it to facebook. He tags you in it. Step four, your ENTIRE friends list is notified when you're tagged in a picture. Yikes! Now your boss knows what you were doing last night and why you called in "sick" today. Generally speaking, I use facebook. But I set a lot of the privacy rules to be a lot more private than usual. Nobody gets notified when I'm tagged in a picture or video, for example. It's important to realize that your friends not only see what you post, but what's posted about you as well. If you can live with that, it's a pretty good way of re-connecting with people you used to know. |

As trivial as most of the stuff is I can at least keep up on who among them is dating who and what's up with many of their job searches etc (intermediate depth between "I'm bored" and "I just got a ____ enlargement".) |

i've been on facebook since early 2002 (no joke, my alma mater is where mark zuckerberg was from and we were the first test rats). i still use it every day. i think it's great, but i agree that one shouldn't post compromising things. this holds for all internet mediums.

I am an occasional user of Facebook and I can see both sides of the argument.
For me: Pros - I can catch up with the latest news on my favourite bands; ideal for tour details / ticket info etc. I have been able to keep in touch with some of my old compadres from around the world. Cons - Plenty of boneheads on there. I find that by ignoring most of the guff floating about on Facebook, it can be a rather pleasant experience. I use Facebook. I like that I can get caught up on the goings-on of acquaintances at my own speed. They post, I read (or don't). It's flexible, and you don't have to include people you don't like in your business. I don't monkey with the silly games (Mafia Wars, FarmVille) except Scrabble games. I love those.
And, I have two profiles - one personal, and one professional. My personal one is set to have only people I want to, look at it. The professional one is tailored to my professional circle (education) so no beer bong pictures, f-bombs or the like there. Some folks complain bout how much time it takes up. For me, it consumes as much time as I let it. The best thing about it for me was finding a long-lost friend/neighbor whom I always assumed would be dead by now, but actually has a nice family, a loving, beautiful wife and a good outlook on life. That was re-affirming. |

I use it all the time. I found many classmates prior to my high school reunion this past summer. That was cool. I use it to talk to work friends, family, and my scooter family. I don't really do stupid/drunk things so I'm not worried about something showing up that'll embarass me. I actually feel like I know a lot of people better than before we posted on Facebook. For instance, I know all about OZ and his new daughter and how little sleep he gets! It's weird, but in a small way I like knowing odd details about my friends.

We use it regularly as we have loads of family back in the Motherland. As a result we have had more contact with friends and family in the last year than in the previous seven years.
I agree, it is secure as you choose to make it. Pick your settings carefully. We have had long discussions with our daughter about Bebo. She is simply too young and does not have the maturity to handle 'social networking'. That said, there is a bunch of stuff on FB from adult friends that constantly amazes me. Yup don't drink and FB |
