Hi all, your help would be gratefully appreciated. Can someone please tell me what the pipe arrowed in the picture is - part name, function etc? I have just noticed a section is very corroded with a small hole or two. Is it safe to ride to my dealers, about 20 miles away? Cheers.

It's the SAS (secondary air system) pipe. Just changed one on the X9 250 - a right bugger to do. The part is cheap - getting a dealer to it it - expect to pay at least an hour's labour. The favourite method of dealing with this is just to block it off on the exhaust side.

Yes you can ride it - the X9 did over 500 miles before I belatedly found a tuit and replaced it. It'll just sound a bit loud, that's all.

jimc, many thanks for your reply, it's put me at ease. Yeah it does sound loud and I thought it was the hole in my exhaust but once I patched that the noise was still there! My stock exhaust is two years old and is completely shot to bits, looks about 10 years old, and this pipe exactly the same. Any recommendations on a new exhaust other than a stock item? Again thanks for your help.

Leovince do one, the 4road, part number 7466. However I've heard some people have had longevity problems with those as well, with cracking pipes and ends falling out.

I have just started to change this SAS pipe myself and discovered it is a nightmare of a job!!! I also found that the exhaust header pipe where it is bolted to the head is looking almost as bad as the exhaust itself and the nuts & studs look to be breaking up, so a couple or more of questions:

Has anyone else found this? (I have read on other posts that the exhaust on the GTS is a major issue)

How did you get it resolved - did you replace the stock exhaust, if so with what?

Do I need to drop the engine to get at this area - it's the only way I can see how to do it - if so are there any tutorials available?

You'll find it hard to do without a bike lift to get the bike and engine up to a sensible working height. Others will know better than me what alternatives there are for the exhaust system itself.
