Helmet hook extender
by Miguel on Sun Aug 26, 2007 9:55 am

Putting my Shoei Multitec helmet on my Vino helmet hook is nearly impossible. I'm sure this solution this will work on most scooters and motorcycles. My solution has the other obvious advantages - you've got a wrench with you. I'd love to find a multitool to replace the adjustable wrench if anyone has any suggestions. To steal my helmet, somone would need to cut the D-rings or the wrench (which I think would be difficult to do but not impossible).

BTW, my medium helmet does fit under the seat with the helmet flip-up closed and put in upside down but I put my armored jacket under the seat so the helmet has to live outside. I put it in the helmet bag if I'm going to leave it all day.
Miguel
I usually hang it so the open end is facing the scooter to help keep the things from blowing and collecting in the helmet.

Another thing I read somewhere is to remove the brand, in this case 'SHOEI" labels from the helmet to reduce the 'value' to casual, opportunistic thieves. If it's just a no-name helmet it has less interest.

Good point! I also turn the helmet bag inside out because the Shoei name is on the outside.

Great pics, Miguel. I had seen posts referencing this method before. Glad to see someone took the time to document it with photos.

That is awesome!

My Sym RV250 has what are rumored to be helmet hooks at the front of the pet carrier but to reach them would require dismantling the assembly that holds the seat up and then the seat has what I can only describe as "jowls" that hang down and do not seem to allow the seat to close with a helmet in the way. I will be trying this solution as soon as I get home!

Thanks

Yeah, I forgot about Sears' tool replacement policy!! For our non-US collegues, Sears is a large department store and maker of Craftsman tools (about 100 years old) that will replace any hand tool you may break - at least that was their policy for many years. I've never broken one so don't know how it all works.

I've never tried cutting a wrench but I'd imagine its pretty hard and nearly impossible to hold while cutting so I haven't worried about someone stealing it. My biggest worry was someone cutting the D-ring off just to vandelize something.

Thx

Great thinking, Miguel.

My helmet has the seatbelt type fastener and I have yet to work out a way to get it on the hook. I think I'd need a tiiiny wee spanner!

Just to be more concise, Sears will not replace the Sears line of hand tools. Only the Craftsman Line of Tools have a Life Time Warranty, but it won't cover a tool that has been cut in half.

When I'm using a helmet with a 'seat-belt' catch I put the longer strap over the edge of the underseat storage about mid-way along and then lock the seat down over it. Holds the helmet very securely. Even works on the long strap of my D-ringed Shoei Multitec.

Thanks for the tip. I've got a great deal on a Nolan full face with the seat belt style clasp and I've been wondering how to lock it on the scoot.

If the strap's long enough the helmet can then rest on the seat while still being locked, rather than hanging down and sticking out from the side. Useful on wider-bodied scooters.

You can attach a ring (the kind used to hold keys) onto the strap, behind the clasp. That works for my Nolan...

Also there's this:
http://www.bizrate.com/motorcycle-parts/motorcycle-helmet-lock-extensions/

I use these, and they go thru the rings on my helmets and then fit over the existing helmet lock nubs under under the seats of both my GT and my Buddy. I keep 'em in the pet carriers; nothing could be easier, and the chrome ones are pretty too! 8)

After thinking about your solution. Homer Simpson's DOH !! comes to mind.

And the helmet sitting on the seat is even better.

I've done a similar thing with my jacket if the pet carrier is full. I put an (armored) elbow inside and drape the jacket across the seat.

My full-face helmet doesn't fit in the PC. Nor will it hang from the under-seat hooks, as the strap is too short.

Lightweight and inexpensive helmet extenders can be made from a loop of 1/16" cable. These let any standard helmet hang from the GTS's helmet hooks, and won't tear up the leather as some D-rings and extenders do.

It looks like it would work with the 'seat belt' style of clasps, but I haven't checked this.

Materials cost less than $2 at Home Depot:
* 11 inches of 1/16" vinyl-covered cable
* 1 swage fitting, sanded smooth after crimping
(crimped in the HW store so I didn't have to make/buy a tool)
* 2 inches of electrical tape to cover the swage fitting

Pictured below is a basic loop. For the concept, I have to thank necessity. While shopping at the HW store, was struck by the need for a helmet lock for my next destination -- a night on the town.

Options for a 'pro' version:

* stainless cable (from a bicycle shop or marine supply house)
* heat-shrink tubing instead of tape
* vinyl color to match paint
* shorter, 'just long enough' loop so that the cable isn't visible/accessible to thieves who might think to use a cable cutter

another inventive solution to the problem! nice work.

is the electrical tape to protect the swage fitting or everything else from the fitting?

The swage fitting was crimped, smoothed with a mini sanding drum on a rotary tool, and then taped over. This protects the scoot and helmet from scratches.

abobotek,

Wow! That is a great idea. I have a home made extender made from an old money clip. It works, but I've never really been happy with it. Yours looks like just what I need.

Where in Home Depot do I look for this cable? I like the idea of using heat shrink instead of tape, too. Tape has a tendency to get "gooey" after a while. If you wanted to use the heat shrink and have the store do the crimp, you would have to take the tubing to the store with you, though. Buying the crimper might not be a bad idea if they aren't too expensive. I'm thinking maybe get a few feet of cable and a few crimps. Again, if the price isn't too bad. I'll bet there are all kinds of things you could make with them.

Swage crimpers are a handy thing to have around a home shop, and the basic types are inexpensive... we sailors use them all the time.

I'd suggest dipping the swage in liquid Plasti-Dip, the stuff used to coat tool handles and available in most hardware stores. I think that would be a lot more durable than electrical tape.

Not got pics at hand at the min..but posted a while ago...i find it better to use a normal longer crome spanner, as they bend at a angle, which is better to hang the helmet down on.....etc.....we use one each side, for the 2 helmets........good point about the seat belt style helmets through...use a key ring holder.....going to try this out, many thanks....also like thge strap one too.......so long as its a thin one to go through the small hole...

The 1/16" cable was on a roll and sold by the foot at Home Depot in the hardware section. It was among various sizes and styles of cables, chains and fittings. The 1/16" oval aluminum swage fittings were in a package in the same isle. A bolt-cutter style crimper was sold there. I don't know if they also sell the less expensive ones. The help was kind enough to suggest that I could just use a crimper rather than buy it.

11" of cable is longer than needed. 9" is probably enough.

One thing helpful to take with you is a wire stripper or knife to cut off a few mm of vinyl where the cable ends go inside the swage fitting, and perhaps heat shrink tubing.

After crimping, you may smooth the swage fitting (e.g., with a sanding drum on a rotary tool), and/or cover the swage fitting with tool handle dip, heat shrink tubing, or heat shrink tubing.

Hope this helps.
