Well, in an attempt to solve a problem with one of my bill-pay websites, I have created another.

I use Firefox all the time, except in those rare instances when a website designer developed his product around IE and I have to use it.

Case in point, in desperation to solve my on-line bill paying problem, I downloaded IE8 because I thought it would help. Well, no it didn't. In fact, it made another problem.

It seems that IE8 isn't compatible with my all-in-one printer/scanner. As a result, I cannot scan a document to save because the send to drop down list is now empty. Of course, IE warns you every time you bring it up.

Now I am thinking I should go back to my previous IE to at least solve the scanner problem. Problem is, I don't know which version I had before. Might have been IE6 or IE7.

So, I guess I am seeking advice and recommendations about going for a downgrade on my IE. Which should it be?

WWJD? (What would Jess do?)

Sounds like a nightmare!

Perhaps you could reload the printer/scanner software
and thus overwrite what IE8 has overwritten?

If you're up for it, you could also uninstall IE8 first
In any event, are you really sure you wish to reinstall it?

Good luck! Wish I knew more

I'm not sure if it's possible to downgrade IE, and even if you do I'm not 100% sure your old Send To links will be back.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and software for the printer/scanner is probably the best bet.

FIRST...Try installing the current versions of the printer driver from the manufacturers website before you uninstall all that software.

Uninstalling IE, any flavor, can be tricky and cause wore problems unless you have a roll-back point that is stable and reliable.

Another option is to use Firefox, like I do, or Opera or Safari.

I did reload the printer/scanner software. It didn't help.

It is strange that the scanner can't find a place to save to in the entire Windows package. No browser is active when scanning from a document.

What are you on? Windows XP?

I uninstall IE 8 all the time at work. Customers here at work always wants the greatest and latest. Unfortunately IE8 sucks, and I am an IE fan.

1. Click 'Start' -> 'Control Panel' -> 'Add or Remove Program'
2. Click on 'Windows Internet Explorer 8' and click remove.

After you do that, it will just revert to what you had. If it was IE6 you will get that back. If it was IE7, that is what you will get back.

Does your printer/scanner company employ helpdesk dudes in India that you could call?
Do they have a user board that you could consult?
If it's HP, I believe they have both

You sir, have made my day. I just sent IE8 packing. Lo and behold, IE6 is in residence!

Unfortunately, the scanner problem still exists. I have been all over the HP support site and haven't yet found the answer.

Model of your scanner? Is it using HP Director or something? What exact problem is it giving you? Script errors?

{Educated Guess} because you've updated to another version of IE, it broke your install of your scanning software. Now that you downgraded and back to IE6, you will need to do a clean install of your HP scanning software so it can overwrite certain files needed to operate. I would try this.

1. Clean install (recommeded). Click 'Start' -> 'Control Panel' -> 'Add and Remove Program' -> 'HP Director or whatever is related to scanning'

2. Reboot computer

3. Get your original software that came with your scanner and install HP Director and driver.

4. After that, click on Start -> All programs -> HP Software Update or HP Update

5. Follow instructions to check for updates and apply them.

I have issues with printers too, especially when using IE8. But then again I'm using a Dell, which always seems to be hooked up to HP printers, which have always had software issues together (at least, according to my experience, and that of a friend who used to work at Dell tech support).

The current problem is that anything I print from IE8 doesn't print with any red ink. I can save the page/image to the computer, and it prints out just fine. Don't know why, and I'm not sure I really want to. The other 3 computers hooked up to it don't have issues.

I've gotten to the point where I rarely even ask for help with Dells hooked up to HP printers. I've just given up. If I need something printed that badly, and the machines are refusing to cooperate, I take a USB key with what I need, and support my local library by paying them to print crap for me.

OK, I uninstalled the printer software again and then went through the reload again. Same problem. The scanner cannot find where to send the scan because the drop down list for file destination is empty.

My last poke at this before I hit the sack.

You might want to try this patch, can't hurt. Not sure on your exact problem, as I never owned a scanner. I just remember solving a similar issue when I use to worked for Xerox 4 years ago.

Downloaded that and my computer said that patch didn't support any of the drivers I had and it wasn't necessary.

Could you just use system restore to revert everything back to when it was working?
Start > Help > Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Then just pay the bill via a check in the post.

Sorry this won't solve your problem, Nightwing, but I'm compelled to comment.

I had a dream the other night that an unknown number called my mobile and when I answered it was you asking for assistance with Windows XP. I'm an IT Support Engineer so it isn't that far fetched that I'd be getting asked about that sort of thing, but an international call would be stretching it a bit. Especially from someone I've never met and not really interacted with to any great extent. You got rather pissed off and hung up on me because my PC was running a bit slow and I was taking a bit of time between instructions. Anyway I'll forgive you for that (Razz emoticon) and join in if I can think of anything that might be helpful.

It should help you get a resolution if you tell us what make/model the device is, what software you're using (inc. version number if possible) and what version of Windows you're using. Sorry if you've already answered these - I've looked and can't see it on the thread. At any rate, it would make sense to have all that information on the same post.

ETA: Or try Mike's idea. That might work...

Have you tried the IE tab add-on for Firefox? You can use your Firefox browser and view pages that prefer IE. I don't know if that would help or not, but maybe it's worth a try.

Yes and I use it all the time when I have to. Not all web sites work with FireFox. The problem exists without a browser being in play. It is strictly an issue between the all in one printer not being able to find a location for a scan. In other words, I can't scan a document and save it to my computer.

The problem developed, I believe, after I upgraded to IE8, which doesn't support part of the HP software. I have since removed IE8 and gone back to IE6, but the problem is still there.

Perhaps not the solution for the immediate fix, but I had all the problems you describe too at one time. Support from Dell and HP all SUCKED, primarily because I couldn't understand them.
Problem ended up being an easy but costly solution.
I switched to Apple and my problems vanished.
