Hi, I stumbled across this forum this evening whilst looking for anything online to fuel my love of my new scooter (two year old GTS125) and I seem to have struck gold! - what a brilliant place to spend time!!

I have only been riding since Friday - CBT day and scooter purchase day. As a 43 year old it is 27 years since I first rode anything motorised on two wheels (Yamaha FS1) and as soon as I could learn to drive a car I did and somehow bikes or scooters never got a look in from then on.

However, having relocated to South London and needing a 13 mile commute, like so many of you, I have grown tired of the train, tube and bus, the cost, the waiting and the overcrowding.

Today I did a 60 mile round journey up through North London out to Hertfordshire on business - it chucked it down for much of the time and was really windy.........but I loved it!!

That was a long winded way of saying "Hi", and I look forward to hanging out here.

Cheers

Hi Trafficjammer,

Thanks for the welcome.

I only have some slightly dodgy sweaty palmed shots that I took on the day that I put down a deposit - I am going to take some better shots at the weekend and post them up.....it just has to be done really doesn't it

Hi J.D and Genie,

Thanks for the welcome.

Yes, scootering Londoners! - I saw quite a few on the road over the last couple of days and sort of wanted to start up a conversation at every set of lights!

Can I ask a really basic question that might seem a bit weird......however I have been thinking it over.....

My GTS has quite a bit of extra kit on it...clearly the previous owner really loved the machine and may have even been/still be a member of this forum.

The scooter has a top box and therefore makes me rather visible, however I am thinking about removing it until a passenger can benefit from the back rest. Partly this is down to wanting to reveal the classic shape of the scooter

Do any of you have a view as to the benefits of a top box on a scooter for anything more than an ability to carry stuff.....I am simply thinking about whether a top box contributes to greater visibility or not?

to be honest i've never thought about whether or not the topcase contributes to visibility... though unless it's a very small one i suspect that it would. It will give the scooter a higher profile at the rear end and increase its overall bulk, both of which should give it more visual presence. if you sling a bit of reflective tape on there it will certainly help you to be more visible at night.

Cheers Genie,

I was erring on that side of things - the reflective tape idea is a good one - especially with darker commuting times just around the corner

Welcome Indibeard.

I hope you enjoy the forum as much as I do. There is a wealth of information here. Be sure to check out the wiki and learn to use the search function.

Don't be afraid to ask "newbie" questions either. Most of the folks here are really friendly and helpful.

Hi Indibeard, I'll add my welcome to your thread.

Regarding your question of the topcase, I do believe that the topcase helps in your being more visible to others, mostly from the side but also from behind. However, because the "reflectors" in the topcase (I assume you have the Vespa topcase) are non functioning, they don't help as much as they could. If you add some 3M reflective tape under the red lenses, you will find that you will greatly increase your visibility from behind.

Welcome Indie,
I hope you enjoy yourself here as much as I have. Most of the people here are REALLY nice and helpful. You will really learn a lot from their experience.

To answer your question about the topcase, JMO, but I do feel that the case adds to my visual print. Anything that makes you a bit more noticeable cannot be a bad thing.

Have fun!
