Aha! A programming challenge for Jess, most likely involving sophisticated compression algorithms!
But perhaps we, as community members, should take it upon ourselves to tidy up our own spaces. Just click the Profile link under any of your posts to reveal your diskspace usage, then click the link for the User Attachment Control Panel which reveals a list of all the images you've uploaded, showing the file name, extension, and size of each one as well as the thread on which it's posted it.
Click the link to the thread and it takes you right to the image in situ, at which point you can replace it with a "more fully processed" image that takes up less space.
Of course then posts will be littered with "last edited on..." notations.... oh well!
