Since there have been multiple threads on the karma, perhaps a solution is to have the ability for the user to turn off seeing it (and as a result, participating in voting in it). On many of the boards I visit, you have the ability turn off avatars so perhaps the karma system could be modified the same way. That way those who value it can continue its use and those of us who think its silly can turn it off.
