Can anyone vouch for the quality of their leather jackets? They are having a sale on a few for $39. At that price, I'm willing to take the risk, but was wondering if anyone actually had them and might be able to give a first hand review of the quality etc.

TIA

While I don't know their stuff, the fact that they're selling denim jackets as motorcycle gear speaks volumes about their concern for their customer's safety.

Sept 88 "Cycle" magazine article "Abrasion Testing: Torn in the USA".
Quote:
Drag Test

"For the Drag Test, samples were stitched to a bag that held a 75-pound
sandbag inside a milk crate, then dragged behind a pickup truck..."

Taber Test

"For the Taber Test, the specimen was mounted on a rotating platform and
scuffed by two rubber-emery grinding wheels." The numbers represent the
number of revolutions until the fabric totally fails. A vacuum clears
debris.

Two-year-old 100% Cotton Denim Jeans 168
New 100% Cotton Denim Jeans 225

Leather, Fashion Weight, 1.75 oz./sq. ft. 750

More to consider...

"Finally, protection from road abrasion cannot be guaranteed by a
materials abrasion resistance alone. A jacket may have panels of
highly abrasion-resistant materials, yet if low-quality stitching joins
those panels and the seams come apart upon impact or during a slide, then
the abrasion resistance of the panels could count for nothing.
Furthermore, an ill-fitting garment may ride up in a slide, contorting
the body and exposing the skin. And the best jacket in the world, left
unzipped and/or unsnapped, won't give riders the protection they pay
for. When it comes to safety, the issues are more complex than just the
abrasion resistance of materials."

'Quality leather' and '$39' are mutually exclusive.

Harvey, is that test from 1988? If so, have any of the high tech materials improved?

Yes, 1988. I don't think so; Cordura's a bit heavier- generally 500 denier vs 440 denier is the most common fabric (there's also Cordura 1000). The rest haven't changed (I think). There's also some hi-tech fabrics like Schoeller Keprotec with Kevlar, but I've noticed even BMW has switched from this back to Cordura.

Cheap Leather...
It is acceptable to the Cruiser crowd to wear denim jackets, so they are to some degree just meeting the needs of some clientele.

[quote: While I don't know their stuff, the fact that they're selling denim jackets as motorcycle gear speaks volumes about their concern for their customer's safety.]

When you consider how many millions of animals are slaughtered daily around the world, there is a lot of hide floating around, and if labor is cheap, they can puke out somewhat acceptable jackets. I have seen lots of cheapo asian jackets that are pretty nice in materials and quality--at first glance, anyway. I would be more interested in what chemicals I would be exposed to from the processing and coloring of the hides in those cheap labor/dubious ethics countries. I picked up a summer leather jacket from "Jammin'Leather" a couple of years ago and it was not bad at all for the price.

Of course I appreciate the well made high-quality leather jackets and other goods, and prefer them, but the cheapos have their place.

In 1964 I had a job delivering stationary supplies on a Fuji Rabbit. The people who ran the shop called it "Harvey".

Of course.

You know, now that I think back on it, they were all pretty fond of their alcoholic beverages! The owner in particular was a sweet guy who probably kept a good maintenance level in his blood stream throughout the day.
