I've got a rain suit made my Columbia that I bought years ago for traveling. It certainly wasn't made for riding because even when I close the flap over the zipper, rain is still making it's way through the zipper and soaking the front of my shirt.
I wanted to see what kind of rain gear you guys use, and might suggest.
I'd rather it be a two piece, and I would need XL...

Best thing is a simple RUBBER suit. You can get them on fleabay for about $40 (they come from China though if that's a concern).

All this Gortex crap and Scotch guard crap is just crap when it comes to rain. You want to keep rain out? Rubber suit. Get the kind that the pants have stirrups to keep down over your boots.

Hot as balls in the summer though, but in the winter it's an excellent wind barrier to wear under a jacket for long rides.

Corsa hit the nail squarely on the head. I had a Rukka rubber rainsuit that I used for about 20 years before it finally started falling apart. It worked great while others that I rode with used all the other types and were constantly getting wet from leaks. Buy a rubber suit.

I was reading Wangta's log of his cross country adventure and I recall him REALLY liking something called Frogg Toggs. They sound like the cats meow when it comes to riding in the rain

https://modernvespa.com/forum/topic48987

"Was pretty miserable. Rained practically the entire ride, and at times, torrential downpour. Had to turn around a couple times because of flooding - one town had over a foot of water in the main road! And yes, I still didn't have rain gear! Decided I needed to get some ASAP, so found nearest dealer for Frogg Toggs on the way - Bass Fishing in Auburn, and decided to make a pit stop. Left with a bizarre blueish/purple Frogg Togg suit which kept me "dry" the rest of the trip (though my suit was already wet!). "

Here's a link to the Frogg Toggs website to the set that is for motorcyclists. Comes in Two Tone and reflective pinstriping

I'll vouch for the Frogg Toggs too. I used them originally as rain gear on the water and realized they are also the perfect rain gear for the scoots. They are breathable which is reeeeaaaaall nice down hear in TX. They fold up small and they are well made.

You can get them at most outdoors stores (Bass Pro Shops, Academy, Dicks).
There are also some generic brands that are similar, but the quality of the off brands can be pretty shoddy.

You can get frog toggs much cheaper than the MSRP.

Cabela's has them online for 54.00 bucks, and places like Academy will put them on sale regularly. The last pair I bought was about $45.00 bucks.

that's a tough choice, the breathability and reflective stripes make me lean toward froggy but are they really waterproof based on what corsa said?

If you are talking real Gortex, Corsa is wrong in my humble opinion. I use Gortex dry suits all the time for kayaking and the stuff works. The problem is Gortex is spendy... real spendy.

For economics I stand by the Frogg Toggs. I have used Frogg Toggs on my scoot in the rain twice. Worked very well indeed, albeit is is not gonna be as impenetrable as rubber (no pun intended). 8)

I guess basing your decision on your own climate should be a factor.... A rubber suit in Texas is pure misery 9 months of the year. Whereas Frogg Toggs up north would keep the rain out, but won't keep ya warm.

2 cents

after doing a search on MV for frogg togg, it looks like lots of people have this and all of them recommend it, except for something about how it doesn't cover your shoes, and I can live with that.

I'll go ahead and place my order today. Thank you people of the internet!

As I said in another thread - I've got an $800 Aerostich Gortex suit and it's little more than a sponge. Granted it's 3 years old, but even brand new it couldn't hold its own against $40 worth of rubber sewn together.

Well, that's a shame. ...

But, I would write that off to a bad apple, or the brand, or something... I say that because I literally live in Gortex on and in the water on average 2 days a week maybe. I have tons of gort. Brands from NRS to Extrasport to Hodgeman to Kokatat, and barring me putting a hole in it I stay dry as a bone.

I have one of these:
http://www.newenough.com/raingear/2_pc_suits/nelson_rigg/nelson_rigg_rs_100_rally_two_piece_motorcycle_rainsuit.html

Keeps me very dry. I wore it to work one day and took a full roostertail of water from a passing car. Felt like getting hit with a firehose but I was nice and dry under the suit.

Made from PVC. Stays cool in the summer as long as it remains raining. Once the rain stops it bites. These Frog Toggs sound interesting.

LOL! Duct tape to the rescue! I guess I don't have that one. Mine is made by Nelson Rigg butthe one the guy is wearing in the photo looks a little thin, nylonish. Mine is thick pvc.

Another vote for the Frogg Toggs. It's awesome and you avoid pruneage under the suit. I got the shocking yellow from the sportsman's guide and not only was it bone dry during a downpour, it did block a fair amount of the wind. I keep 'em under the seat in my commuter just in case. They do run a bit large, but I've always been a fan of the Talking Heads look...

Hah, yeah man - I remember this. Freakin rained like crazy the first 3 or 4 days on the east coast. We literally had to stop because I was afraid the water would choke out the engine. What a nightmare. Frog Toggs saved me - they are made of this really kinda weird material, but they are light and really do keep water out - even the crotch area. They also fit into a small little bag quite easily - you can see the bag rolled up behind me on my PX in some of hte pictures. And someone else mentioned wind blocking - yes, frogtoggs are windproof and keep you super warm - the difference was really noticable.

The one thing that I never did figure out - how to keep your hands dry. I don't think they make motorcycle gloves that are waterproof (I know this sounds stupid, but I checked every website - everyone said to wear those yellow dishwashing gloves if I really wanted dry hands!).

Check it out - they are pretty freakin ugly, but they work!

Still, it looks great, and I appreciate the advise. Thanks guys!

Sorry to resurrect an old(ish) thread, but I'm still confused. I keep looking at the Frogg Toggs on different sites, including the official site, and I still don't know the difference between the different versions.

It seems you can spend anywhere between 20 and 160 dollars, but there is nothing I can see that tells what the difference is between them.

So, will the $20 Frogg Togg Driducks be good enough? Or do I need the more expensive ones? Do you "get what you pay for?" If so, why?

Please, someone explain this. I don't have any stores within 150 miles or so where I could go look at them myself.

I ended up buying this:
http://www.froggtoggs.com/store/choose.asp?ItemNum=FT1122&ItemColor=22

It's amazing, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Sure, you have to make sure that the zipper is lined up just right at the bottom of the jacket before you pull the zipper up. Other than that one tiny issue, it really is a great product and I strongly suggest it.
It's not like I've owned any of the other styles, so I can't really help you compare them.

Aleck, which of the Frogg Toggs did this? I know there are several styles with different prices, but I haven't been able to get a good answer from anyone as to what the actual difference is. I've been thinking about getting them, but don't want to have the same experience you did. Also, please keep us posted as to the outcome with their customer service.

Ohh... that sucks. Contact Customer Service, they should have a one year warranty.

I rode Sunday in a pair that's over two years old and they still worked perfectly.

I did ruin a pair a few years go that covered in fish blood, guts, gore... I washed them with a detergent that had fabric softener in it, and the fab softener mucked 'em all up.

So I got to really thinking about this, and I think I might know what the problem is:
I'll admit, I've got a gut on me. I'm not super fat, but I have a gut to be sure. I'm thinking that water is pooling in my lap, and my belly is sitting in it, and the water eventually soaks through.
If that is in fact what is happening, then I might need to get a rubber suit after all.
Still, even if that is the case, why has this just started becoming a problem, after I've had the suit for two months now?

So I got to really thinking about this, and I think I might know what the problem is:
I'll admit, I've got a gut on me. I'm not super fat, but I have a gut to be sure. I'm thinking that water is pooling in my lap, and my belly is sitting in it, and the water eventually soaks through.
If that is in fact what is happening, then I might need to get a rubber suit after all.
Still, even if that is the case, why has this just started becoming a problem, after I've had the suit for two months now?
Which model did you buy again? What does the material feel like?

Mine feels like this weird paper like material - it is really light. I tested it by having someone spray me with a hose and I stayed dry. Strange?

According to the URL he posted above (http://www.froggtoggs.com/store/choose.asp?ItemNum=FT1122&ItemC) it is the LeepFrogg.

Which ones do you have, Wangta?

I called them and they offered an exchange right away, so that's cool. I'm kinda considering buying the rubber suit that's listed above, and using rubber overalls/pants and the Frogg Togg jacket.

But that's just more stuff to buy, so who knows, I probably won't screw with all that.
I am however, getting the next size up, and hopefully that will help.

Several years back, we both had Helly Hansen boating rain suits. No idea what the Hellys cost, as they were complementary for providing the committee boat for a regatta. The sail guys can't race without us power boaters providing adult supervision. Lent them to some friends for what was to be two weeks, but they ran their boat aground and couldn't return in time for our departure on a six week cruise.

So, while cruising off the coast of British Columbia, we get a forecast of heavy rain. Stopped at Lund, BC and in the local hardware store, we found $15 (CDN) two piece, light rubberized fabric rain suits of no discernable brand name. Best foul weather gear we have ever owned for boating and riding. BTW, we let the neighbors keep the HH gear and we still have the no name stuff.

and now they're only $20. i see no reason to invest hundreds of dollars in motorcycle rain gear...i ride a scooter, and rarely above city traffic speed. just throw it on over whatever i'm wearing and voila, gorton's fisherman. easy to don, never leaks. and chicks love it.
