Running a p200 in a 150 sprint veloce frame. The carb box is rubbing against the frame, is this to be expected? As it's seriously affecting the handling at roundabouts.

and

As the auto lube is not in use can I refit the carb into a smaller box, or do I need to take a hammer to the frame? Crying or Very sad emoticon

Can you reset the shock/suspension bits so that it is jacked up a little?

I've already done that, before I couldn't even get the cover on the frame.

I could raise it further but the back end already seems pretty high up.

You gottta cut the frame a little
From past experience with a P200(w/ electric starter) in a 74 rally and a P200 motor in a 74 super, you will have to cut the frame a little to clear the air box. Cut off only about 1 inch high by 3 to 4 inches long, so there is no rubbing.
We used a dremel tool with a metal cut off blade, took about 2 minutes and then hit it with a little sander pad to smooth the rough sharp edge off.
You can put a little paint on it to keep the bare metal from rusting if you like.
No more rubbing.

Ah ha,

Thanks Chas/guys, I'll probably start that next week and report back.

ScooterRaton, yeah, it's a pretty mean......but really loud, I did'nt realise how antisocial it was going to be. Occasionally I wish I had stuck with the standard vespa exhaust especially when I consider the hassle I had with moving and changing the stand........but then again it's pretty swift nowadays:)

I can't see cutting the frame. I would rather bang a big dimple into the metal to give you the clearance. And spray a lot of anti-rust primer to protect the metal inside and out when you are done.

cut another extension bolt in half and fit it to your suspension itll lift the arse ... or you could cut the frame ... or fit a manifold and bigger carb and cut the panel ......... youll have a big prob if you want it leaving standard.... youve already started the road to ruin swapping the lump

Yeah hjo, I've got both of those correctly fitted. I can see when why you'd think they were missing tho.

it looks like the frame is sitting too low. could it be the shock is a shorter style?

the engine case / carb box are the same size on a sprint and vsx... i don't know about the shock mount, though... maybe a second spacer would help? (i agree with T5bitsa69). you shouldn't need to cut into the frame!

Is the box top rubbing or the backside of the box.

I read here somewhere that there is a smaller carb box tops for some carbs? Two diff. Tops for the same box.
Stay tuned for more comment. Before you start cutting things.

It's the backside (corner) of the box and the lid is exacerbating the situation due to the protruding rim.

I'll do what you say and hold fire with the hacksaw and hammer until we get a few more comments.

I'll be trying to fix this tomorrow night, either by hacksaw or hammer, unless anyone has any other suggestions.....

Get a DellOrto 24/24 PHBL / PHBH side slide carb. You will need a manifold for it, longer choke cable, different throttle cable to make it work. I believe it will sit way lower with out clearance issues.

Do not use the the P-series shock spacer. It is making the carb hit the back of the frame because it is too jacked up. The P-series spacer is for a shock on a P-series frame. If you sit on the bike you'll see the carb box move away from the frame. Get a smaller spacer.

Problem solved mattgyver was right, I removed the extension from the shock, refitted it and the carb moved forward perfectly.

Here's the rear shock with the extension removed

and the carb/frame gap I now have

http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/21oKvxaPtf2eRkvmSaX7oA?feat=directlink

and the rear height now
